Image Not FoundImage Not FoundHi all. While going thru some old material that I had bought on Ebay about 12 years ago, I re-found this old cover which I believe shows a Ring of Pearls "silent precancel" on the postage due stamp. I believe I have an old pamphlet which describes some of these 'silent precancels' but just can not find it at the moment. So while I am searching for it, I am posting this item for any comments. Silent precancels was the fore-runners of the normal city/state precancels that we are familiar with.

Mike in NC / meostamps

PS The cover does contain a 3 page enclosed note which might account for the addition postage due stamps at the time. And the paper of both the cover and the letter is on the thick side, which may account for the item needing additional postage above the 3c stamp that it was originally posted with.

Minor correction. This was not an old Ebay purchase but something I picked up from a vendor at a small outdoor flea market in lower Manhattan in the 2004-5 period. Believe I paid less than $5 for it, probably closer to $ 3.00 Mike in NC / meostamps

re: Ring of Pearls "silent precancel" on old US postage due

Hi All

My information comes from the 1925 edition of "handbook on bureau and local Precancels".

These ring of pearls comes in three variations, but I've only have two. The variations are indicated which way the tail on the "Y" points as follows:

Tail of the "Y" points to right. (see below)
Tail of the "Y" points to left. (see below)
Tail of the "Y" points the vertical (reported to occur only on the 5 center, I've never seen one of these so I can't say for sure they exist)

The cover shown on the original post by mdroth, is the only cover I've ever seen, of course there could be many more out there, just do not remember seeing one before.

Seems like all I've seen always have 24 pearls, has anyone seen more or less pearls?

Original covers showing this precancel indicate that it was used by a number of New York City substations during the period from 1879 to 1886.

re: Ring of Pearls "silent precancel" on old US postage due

This is an interesting area and I have not found many people who know a lot about it.

First, is it possible that the left facing and right facing cancels are really the same one, depending on whether the handstamp was applied right-facing or rotated 180 degrees?

Next, I have found String of Pearls cancels on all of the values in the first and second series of postage dues. Not so common in the second set, but many of them can be viewed on the PF site by dialing in on previous certs issued. Curiously, J7 is much much more common with a precancel than a standard cancel.

Speaking of J7, I just bought a J7 on eBay that was advertised as a J21. Curiously, it is NG (but sadly with a crease). Has anyone ever seen an unused String of Pearls?

On reflection, you weren't suggesting that there were two different precancel stamps, just that they were applied in two ways. My bad.

Providing there is a complete precancel on the stamp, and it is a fault-free stamp, F-VF centring or better, generally $15-$20.
