Greetings all from North Florida! I'm a new member and I have been collecting on and off for about 20 years. Up to this point I have collected used US pre-1940. I have been fairly patient for the most part and have tried to acquire examples that are very lightly and/or face free cancelled. I waited YEARS to find just the right copies of the Q10 and q12 parcel post stamps. I have been mounting my stamps in a Scott National album with Showguard mounts. I gotta be honest, my collection is looking very cool! It is super gratifying when you put that last stamp in that completes a series or a page.

Recently I've been getting the itch to start a new collecting area. I was browsing through SOR and enjoyed seeing some of the exhibits and the passion that other collectors have. I've thought about collecting postmark dates, topicals, Cinderellas and seals etc. I would be looking for an area that could be enjoyed inexpensively. Your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ernie

Welcome, Ernie, from Orlando.

It's always interesting to me to hear what someone collects and why.

There are lots of wonderful people here to share your interests.

Do you ever go to any of the shows down here in Florida? BOB

Hey BOB in Orlando...I've been to the annual stamp show that the Jacksonville club puts on a handful of times and I've been to the one in Sarasota a couple of times. What are some of the bigger/better shows in Florida?

Welcome aboard Ernie, from beautiful downtown Cape Coral, about 300 miles due south of you. Some of us would appreciate a scan of some of those sheets you are proud of, just to be nosy and to see how someone else does it, plus give us other ideas about how to rearrange our own collections.

Ernie,

The next big show is in Sarasota next weekend--the Sarasota National Philatelic Exhibition.

There is a show sponsored by the ASDA Feb 13-15 that will be in Fort Lauderdale.

In Orlando there is the annual show FLOREX in December (first weekend).

There are a bunch of other smaller shows--a good website is www.floridastampshows.com

Welcome Ernie from Jacksonville!!

I met a nice fella at a show in Orlando who said he was from Jacksonville. I mentioned Stamporama to him. Are you that fella or are we lucky enough to get another Jacksonville collector to join us here?

Have fun picking a new collecting area. Buying a collection is a great way to get a foundation to build upon. Something will catch your eye and before you know it you'll be hooked.

Happy stampin'!

Welcome Ernie!!

Like you I'm mainly a collector of used US, tending toward the earlier stuff. I got diverted; however, when I bought a few Scandinavian collections, now I'm up to my ears in posthorns, kings and viking ships! I'm sorting through and writing up modern Iceland now.

One interest that hooked me through discovering Sweden's stamps, was the engraving mastery of Czeslaw Slania. Now I'm collecting topically "Stamps by Engraver". It's an interesting challenge to collect this way, when I've been a country collector for so long. Here's an example:

Hey Mike. Yeah I'd love to show some of my stuff. I'm struggling with technology a little. A good scanner sure makes an online stamp club more fun I'm sure

Thanks Don. I think I read an article about him possibly in the APS magazine a few years ago. He definitely does amazing work. I also have some us bank notes and ephemera with the same engravings that appear on us stamps. I'm very interested in line engraving and that art. Modern photo stamps are less like stamps and more like stickers.

Hi Ernie,

I agree completely. I'm debating how much new stuff (stickers) I really want to add. The Jamestown issue was cool, and I always enjoy a little Johnny Cash, but, it's almost depressing. I think I could spend a lifetime in old definitive series and be happy. I wanted 1940 to be my cutoff, but I'm discovering really nice engraved stamps from the 50-80s, and beyond. This is when I threw in the towel on completeness and re-defined my goals.

I continue collecting US, and I have an interest in in classic worldwide, but I'm adding the engraved stamps I like. This modern Scandi collection I picked up on a whim has me diverted from that presently! haha. Welcome to the club.

I like the distinguished Americans series and the transportation coils they're cool. I would love to build a collection of the first two or three stamps from each country

Hey Ernie,

We just about have the whole Florida area represented now...I'm in West Palm Beach. Glad to see you here.

Really thinking about going to the Ft Lauderdale Show. Leaning more toward it than away from it.

See ya around

I returned to stamp collecting after college by buying a start on a USA collection at a stamp show at Ft. Walton Beach, FL. I had sold everything I had in the way of stamps including a two volume Harris Standard album to my high school chemistry and physics teacher as I was raising money for college.
