They were used by the English Post Office to test the franking alignment on their machines and also for teaching purposes.
In the UK these are often called "poached eggs"!
The poached eggs would be the green ones without writing.
True but I've often heard these called this too.
I don't like to think of green poached eggs!
Nigel, what? You don't like green eggs and ham?
Coincidentally, I was working on Great Britain tonight, and I found two of these test stamps. One was unwatermarked, and the other was watermarked #322 (Scott). The unwatermarked version was printed in a lighter gray color than the other. So, there are at least two version of this test stamp, and my guess would be that there are probably more than that.
They were from a dealer stock that's been sitting around here for several years. The watermarked version had a price of $1.00. There was no price on the other.

I don't know much about these. I was just happening to work on Great Britain, and there were two glassines in the stack that had one of each. Each glassine had notations about watermark, or not, and the price on the one. I knew they were test stamps and their nickname, and use, but that's it. I couldn't tell you if there are more varieties of this or not.
If these are test or "dummy" stamps, they have quite a following

I found these in a big bag of kiloware. They are obviously for test printing but by whom? Has anyone seen anything like these before?
