Seeking information on possible value (if any) on a collection of 122 Monty Wedd historical stamp strips he created for Stamp News (on the history of the stamp). Monty Wedd was an Australian comic artist, animator and author. A sample is shown. Also interesting to note the information on the stamp that I was not aware of, re. the triangle.

Will try to clean up the image so it can be read better. Help from SOR members allowed me to get this far.Thumbs Up

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

This seems to me a really good example of how fascinating knowledge was relayed by imaginative graphic artists to children of any age from, say, 8 to 16, without resorting to the silliness or whimsy which were deemed necessary to attract later generations of young people.

In the UK there was a boys' comic called The Eagle which used the selfsame techniques (among several others) in the 1950s. In those days children were not condescended to, nor seen as relentless consumers of worthless trivia. Of course the social conditions that produced a Monty Wedd or any of the Eagle illustrators were very different; they cannot be replicated. However, today's children are given the message that knowledge is worthwhile only if money is spent acquiring it, and the acquisition will have ultimately profitable results. Wedd's painstaking analysis of how a single stamp can reveal so much about its country's history would not fit into this scheme.

Interesting Mel. I have a number of clippings from Monty Wedd. I believe he did them for at least four different stamp magazines / papers. You can find them both in B/W and in colour, depending on the source (magazine etc.)

The style is reminiscent of the very prolific Robert Ripley, of "Ripley's Believe it or Not" fame. Couldn't stop reading those as a kid.

What would they be worth? Good question. Absent any other information or context, I would guess that a set of 122 different stamp history comics in good condition would fetch as little as $5, or maybe as much as $20 or $30, if you get two people who really want them bidding against each other.

If nothing else, I think they would make a nice topical/novelty album!

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

Would anyone be interested in posting the 122 images on SOR for informational purposes? I would be glad to send the entire collection to someone that is interested in posting, maybe one a week or so and that is much more knowledgeable about uploading images than I am. There are approximately 50-60 different countries depicted. I find the historical information very useful in understanding the stamp depicted. All I ask is that when the volunteer is finished, that the collection be returned to me.

If anyone is interested, message me through the SOR system.

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

The history of the rocketry program at Fort Bliss doesn't seem to be known by many people. The "Corporal" rocket shown on the stamp was about as American as…sauerkraut or bratwurst!

As the Allies moved across Europe following the invasion of Normandy, among their goals was destroying Germany's ability to launch V-1 "Buzz Bombs" against European and British targets. Then, in September, Germany started launching V-2 rockets against enemy targets; the V-2 was the world's first long-range ballistic missile.

The Americans captured enough V-2 rocket parts to assemble 80 complete V-2s. And, of course, the Nazi rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and over 100 key V-2 personnel surrendered to the Americans. Soon after the war, the Americans, working with the German scientists, began testing and modifying the V-2, calling it the "Corporal". That missile became the basis for the development of American ICBMs and the race to space. The Russians, too, had captured V-2 missile parts and facilities, and were soon continuing the development of the V-2 in the Soviet Union. And soon after that, all of us were able to enjoy the nightmare of being annhiliated in a thermonuclear explosion brought to us by hardware that was essentially German.

You've heard my sermon before, about stamps being little more than propaganda packets. The Fort Bliss Centenary stamp certainly did an admirable job for American propagandists.

Since I have not been inundated with request from anyone willing to publish the Monty Wedd History of Stamps, I will attempt to do so myself. Please bare with me as I will try to post all I have. I do this for all that, (and I quote), "love learning and discovering the history and stories behind postage stamps". Some of the words may be hard to read, but that is because of the print on newspaper. So here goes:

I would enjoy seeing them too, however I suggest you reduce the jpg compression (personally, I use 85% and I suspect this is around 25%). Reducing the image size to 800 wide would compensate for any increase in file size. That would make the images much more readable.

I will try to dig out some of my Monty Wedd articles. What I have done in the past, and still in the process of doing, is scan them and put them into a Word File along with numerous other articles, which are non Monty Wedd. I recycle the original paper ones. I will scan what I have left in physical paper form.

Roy, I am not sure I understand your suggestion. I am new at this and my scanner only allows me to scan in different formats and either 300 or 600 dpi. The resizing, etc. is being done in IrfanView. If you can provide me where in that program I can make those changes I will give it a try.

This is very cool. I love the Riel story since it's close to home for me. He was hanged in my hometown. Funny how time changes views -- he was hanged as a traitor but is now thought of (in some circles) one of the later 'Fathers of Confederation.'

As for the Sturt article. Well, I loved it. I'm a big fan of Bill Bryson's book on Australia where he describes how so much of the country is either named after Sturt or Stuart. So it was great to read about one of them!

Hi Cheryl and All

Here are a couple of Monty Wedd articles I came across as I was going through my clippings.

The first one was published in Linns Stamp News on November 11, 1985 and the second one was published in Stamp News (British if I remember correctly (?) in August of 1985. Will post more as I come across them.

For those of you who are interested in knowing more about this man, you might want to go to https://www.google.ca/search?q=Monty+Wedd&biw=1920&bih=896&site=webhp&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=c3s2Vb3KCIWmyASguoHACA&ved=0CCgQsAQ&dpr=1

A lot of good articles in there too

Monty Wedd gets more interesting the more I look. He also did a set of comics on Ned Kelly that have now been put into book form. A nice review here:

And to think, a couple weeks ago I didn't even know Monty Wedd existed!

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

You seem to have tapped the nostalgia bung of my memory barrel.
Please post these as you can.
I recall reading these and other info-cartoons many years ago and not only learned about the characters, but expanded my vocabulary and geographical knowledge. I am thinking that perhaps I can interest my two youngest grandchildren in reading them.
At ages seven and eight they are information sponges.
I fondly recall getting the Sunday papers every week and going over all the cartoon features box by box. Some, possibly most were a bit silly, but there still was a lot of ideas portrayed that otherwise would have been buried in some dusty volume immersed in a sea of apparent gibberish, at least to me at that time.
I believe that we can apply the maxim as to a picture being worth a thousand words to well drawn and carefully researched cartoons. Just look at the "Fort Bliss" page and see if it would not take a fair sized chapter of a book to explain what is compressed into a single "cartoon."

Thanks Mel Happy

Just to keep everyone updated - since the Monty Wedd posts have drawn so much excitement and people are craving them so much, I am going to create a special section in the Historic Articles dedicated to the Monty Wedd illustrations. They will be highlighted at the top of the Article section and a link will be posted on this thread as well.

I do need my vacation and I promise you guys I'll be in top condition when I come back and do the belated Rambler, update the Gazette and create the Monty Wedd highlight. These deserve to be a permanent part of SOR other than just as a thread in the discussion board. By the looks of this discussion I assume there will be a unanimous vote of yes from the membership for this added section.

Keep them coming Mel, and for everyone else, I promise you - it will be great to come back refreshed and at the top of my game. Thumbs Up

Cheryl, not in this Rambler. I was going to do it but then I decided it would be better to wait until I come home and get things stayed online - so something will definitely be in the July copy.

I need a few more to construct a lesson for my two young grand children for the summer.
One was very upset yesterday because she learned that today would be the last day of school for the summer.
I figured I could get them to read one of the pages every day or so and then spend some time explaining the story (History) the novel words for them (Language skills), location of the story (Geography) and so on.

Seeking information on possible value (if any) on a collection of 122 Monty Wedd historical stamp strips he created for Stamp News (on the history of the stamp). Monty Wedd was an Australian comic artist, animator and author. A sample is shown. Also interesting to note the information on the stamp that I was not aware of, re. the triangle.

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

Here is the second one. It is still hard to read. The original was blurred, maybe because of the printing of lines so close together. I tried to sharpen the image, but had no luck.

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

Kelly is taking a well deserved vacation and will be working on the Rambler when she returns. The Monty Wedd illustrations will become a continuing part of the Rambler and will be posted until I run out. I have over 120 full illustrations plus 15 short stamp oddities. Until Kelly returns and is fully refreshed I will post some of the short stamp oddities just to keep your interest up.

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

They would look good with the actual stamp on them but are probably not proportioned.
Maybe we could facsimile them on before they "go to press"

re: Monty Wedd and History of Stamps

I need a few more to construct a lesson for my two young grand children for the summer.
One was very upset yesterday because she learned that today would be the last day of school for the summer.
I figured I could get them to read one of the pages every day or so and then spend some time explaining the story (History) the novel words for them (Language skills), location of the story (Geography) and so on.

Still a little early yet. There are some things going on that I can not elaborate on, because it would only be conjecture on my part. I will be sure to let everyone know when I think this issue has run its course.
