Posted in Liechtenstein and sent up in a rocket in Switzerland.
Am I correct in posting that Cuba had the first rocket stamp in Oct 15 1939.? I believe it was an overprint on a 10cent emerald stamp issued of the 1931-32 domestic postage set
Nelson, thank you very much for posting the article. Very interesting.
Damblanc was correct that the near future would bring rocket service across the Channel. Unfortunately it was not of the type that he had envisioned.
Interesting indeed! Of course rockets predated the "delivery" of mayhem long before the Second World War. I was reminded of a scene in “Sharpe’s Enemy†in the Sharpe's War series. Sharpe is attempting to rescue some English women who have been kidnapped by English army deserters and French renegade soldiers, and orders the use of Congreve rockets. Go to 6 minutes 35 seconds of this link to see the rocketry scene, or watch the whole thing!
I thought that Sharpe’s War was a great series. The books, by Bernard Cornwell, are excellent too. Cornwell has, or at least had, a web site where he discusses the research he does. I once had a question about cavalry sabres, so I asked him: "Why are cavalry sabres curved?" The answer, which came promptly, was interesting, and will help you when you are shopping for the right edged weapon: A straight blade is good for stabbing or chopping, but a curved blade swept in a downward motion by a mounted cavalryman is great for slicing!
