It turns out there was a lot I didn't know about the Channel Islands in WWII. Thanks for a great page that makes it fun to learn.
There's really a ton of information on these pages. I know next to nothing about the Channel Islands. Now, at least, I know what happened during WWII.
Nice job, Bob!
I have recently published four new web pages about different aspects of the occupation of the Channel Islands, Jersey and Guernsey, during the Second World War, and two more are in the works. The new web pages concern:
• The use of British stamps in the first months of the occupation;
• Postal history related to the occupation;
• Stamps issued under the authority of the occupation force (and plans for other occupation stamps that were scuttled by the German high command in Berlin);
• The deportation and incarceration of British residents of the Channel Islands;
• A resistance poem written by the designer of the first set of Jersey occupation stamps;
• The role of the International Committee of the Red Cross in aiding communication of Channel Islanders with family members and friends living abroad.
Several years ago I published a short web page about the first set of Jersey occupation stamps, thinking I had told the whole story. Not so. It's a very complex and interesting story, with ramifications that affect Channel Islanders to this day.
Here's the link to the index page of The Channel Islands at war.
The two as-yet-unpublished web pages concern the German occupation force in the Channel Islands and the occupation-related philately of the Channel Islands in postwar years.
