I`ve sent a message off to the president of American Local Post Society.....we shall see what he has to shed on this post...
Thanks, Cheryl. From the amateurish appearance of the stamp, the manner in which it was affixed (mucilage), and the crude, rubber stamp-like cancel, I think it is probably something done in conjunction with a local fair or stamp show. I'll wait to hear their response.

That was my first thought as well A fundraiser for the event...but interesting....
I've never heard of DES before and I was big into covers at the time, and lived in NJ. Stamp appears to have been printed on a ditto machine. Schools used those, so that's a good thought on the source.
Just a wild guess: Dwight Englewood School? Founded in 1973. Less than 4 miles south of the Tenafly post office.
Kim, I'll bet you are right! Everything fits. Maybe be a school stamp club prepared the covers (and "stamps") in conjunction with their "Spring Fair."
Fit's in perfectly... remember the stamp was printed on a ditto machine, the printer of choice in schools of that era!
A funny story... back around 1973 I saw a ditto machine for sale for under $100 in the local Penny magazine. I wanted it because I was a technically curious lad and had high hopes to make money printing things. I actually printed a few first day cover cachets on the silly thing. But my big coup was that my buddy Don and I printed an underground newspaper for our high school. It was satire, like a National Lampoon school paper. We called it "The Bathroom Wall". We distributed it for free by leaving piles of them around the school. Nobody knew who did it... so this led to a big witch hunt by the school administration. They reasoned that someone snuck in after hours and printed it on their ditto machines, so they staked out the print room. We thought this was just hilarious!
In the end, very close to graduation, I had a falling out with a friend who knew, and he turned us in. We got called into the principal's office. I don't think he had seen it, because when he held it up in front of us, he couldn't stop laughing! He just told us "dont' do this!" and sent us on our way!
I agree with the school fund raiser One of the local schools near where I lived raised money for a class trip by selling stamps (picture post) which was a photo of their school taken by the local post master. They raised enough for their trip as most community folk and stamp collectors including my self wanted an FDC and stamps. It was also the last year the school was open ...All 36 students went on the class trip to Halifax.
Hi Everyone;
Thanks for this thread. I had no idea a obscure local cover could be so interesting.

I stumbled on one of Roy's buck a cover sales, which includes all of his ACE covers, many of which include Local Posts. If you want to take a look, here's the link directly to that group of covers: http://www.buckacover.com/covers/search.php?code=usace&sbd=0&p=0&page=1&num_rows=51. Everything in this section has been seriously discounted.
I hope this is allowed, as it's germane to the local posts; if not, i'll move it to the sale area.

Found this one in a collection I recently acquired. Any information on the "DES Local Post" would be appreciated. The CDS reads "Tenafly, NJ, 07870, Apr 26, 1975."
Since it is unaddressed (does not appear to be an erased address), I presume this was a "favor cancel."
