Has anyone here made album pages with the World Collector software? Care to share your experience?

It says it's a free program that comes loaded with information on stamp sizes. That would make it easier than albumeasy, wouldn't it?

Chris - I have never used it but I have purchased collections that definitely appear to have used something like this for its pages. Not a bad idea especially for free. I am always hesitant to download anything as you never know what is coming along for the ride into your PC

re: making pages with World Collector software

I ended up downloading it. No sign of any malware, it's clean. The inventory part of the program seems to work fine, however I couldn't get the pagemaker with the dimension information to work. I was able to find the dimension info in the database, but this info only goes up to 1999.

Since I'm currently making pages for Australia 2000 and up, it's no use to me at all. Back to my old method, using albumeasy and getting dimensions by measuring from my Steiner pages.

I do generally prefer to use Steiner pages, but in this country/time period they have spaces for entire booklets of self-adhesives. Since I collect used stamps, I don't need to use a full page for one booklet, I only need one row of five spaces. Redoing them looks a lot better and uses about 40% less paper.

Steiner is in pdf & albumeasy produces pdfs I presume?

It is possible to copy a stamp outline from one pdf to another with the right software & eliminating having to measure

I think most countries have got more or less standard dimensions that they use for modern stamps. If looking at my post 2000-Australia, I think it's mostly about 6 different sizes (horiz. or vertical) repeated page after page. Once you see the stamp photo/appearance, you can make a really good guess on the size of it.

Yes. Number of ways to do that. Simple select, copy & paste on Adobe Acrobat (or any PDF-editing tool) is likely the easiest way to achive. Converting Steiner page to Powerpoint-presentation (and later on back to PDF) works really nicely too.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi new to this

Just retired and was looking to start the collection again. Been collecting whole world stamps for a good few years.

Searched for software to help and was caught by world collector. Here is my experience.

Amazingly the software turned out to be free, not just a free trial or free download to pay later so in this day and age a nice suprise. No ads no banners.

I wanted to start making my own albums so started with the quick album part of the program. Selected thw whole of the Portuguese stamps and made my first album really easy. No typing but as above not nuch after 1999. It does say that on the web page so I should have read it.

Wanted a bit more so tried the page designer part. Ended up reading the manual but got it working Ok. Much like above measuring stamps and spaces on some "free" pages i downloaded. Tried to add my data to the database and found it a bit clunky so contacted author and he says he has a spreadsheet I can enter new data on which he can then import into the database. So may move along that route to help other collectors as well.

Started to look at the inventory parts and found it easy to tell the database that I had this stamp or that. I wanted to get to a catalogue valuation but no catalogue details in the database(copyright?) so contacted author again. He pointed me in the direction of entering my catalogue on the system and then when entering my stamps also adding the catalogue info, number and prices. Did this for a while and had good results. A second contact from the author had me looking at exporting and importing catalogue data from other users. The author shared his catalogue detail with me which I then imported and works fine.

Frankly after using this for just a couple of months I am amazed that it is the creation of just one collector and it is free.

I am looking to send info on my stamps for inclusion but want to look at the wants part as I want a good wants list with pictures if possible.

Will get back with more when I learn a little more if there is any interest.

Good looking program.
You sound like you found this new program and are trying it out with success.
But, are you not the designer of the same program?

I am the original owner of kleptoware.co.uk. So yes all original ideas are mine. Well not all just the ones with this program back in the days when it was being sold. So yes a bit of a plug for some software that is actually free.

After some bad years (had to sell my collection) have now started again giving all the software etc away as long as it remains free for all. Getting to know it again.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Old thread I know but I am now developing World Collector again.

Had to face some irksome points.

The first is that all collectors collect in their own way so their list of stamps collected is totally different to just about every other collector.

I programmed lists (Catalogues) to get over this, you are not restricted by any catalogue or anything else. You can simply start your own list by selecting stamp data from the database and then sort this into whatever order you want and of course produce album pages of just your list.

Works well with single countries so I modyfied it slightly to allow themed lists as well which can span many countries.

You can enter other catalogues as well including numbers and values then sort these to match. This workload can be shared.

Added a magnifyer and perforation gauge (mixed results)

It leaves the one big problem of all album page production, stamp sizes! Where I have them they are entered but I now have an export to CSV feature so you can export a selection of stamps and load these into your spreadsheet programme. After adding the sizes or other information missing this can be be uploaded with a simple drag and Drop for inclusion in the main database to be used by all.

Adding data to the database is not a simple matter as the base list of stamps has to be capable of being selected and sorted in inumerable ways so no new stamp issues can be added directly, you can export a list from the database add new issues at the bottom of the csv and send to me and I can add them to the database. It is after all for all stamp collectors to share.

Rewrote the setup, on the Apple MAC it is a DMG file just drag World Collector to applications after download. Windows is a zip file but I have been contacted by some collectors who do not understand zip files so programming a windows setup to download and extract the programme.

On both versions the programme when first run downloads the up to date database and installs it correctly for use. Later updates are accessible from the programme just a menu selection.

Images was another big failing so the programme now allows you to download images for stamps from the country you select and installs them ready for display with the stamp data, no other user interaction required. You can select to download all images but this can take quite a considerable amount of time so not recommended.

The main rewrite is on the Apple MAC and I am looking for testers, not programmers but stamp collectors. A little computer knowledge is good but the main emphasis is on stamp collectors.

If anyone wishes to try the new programme and has an Apple computer please contact me.

Just looked at the AlbumEasy file such a lot to take in.

To help with modifying the album after export I have added some white space between pages and indicated each page start on albums exported from World Collector.

To test I ran France through the mill and got this.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/oc1chp6hz6fzyd4/France.zip/file

When I look at the file now I can see where to insert new pages if needed.

Helpfull?

I have developed a method for extracting the frame sizes from Bill Steiner's pdf album pages. If anyone is interested in receiving a text file with the dimensions please contact me. This is an example from the file afghanistan1940.pdf. Each row contains the frame sequence number, width (mm) and heighth (mm). (I have included the first 10 frames as an example)

0 25 25
1 39 39
2 39 39
3 39 39
4 39 39
5 39 39
6 39 39
7 26 26

Hi #clivel

Good to hear from you.

Thanks for testing.

Just a few questions.

Is it ok for the whole album including images to be in a folder as is?

Is there anything more I can do at export time to make the file more legible / editable?

I will be exporting lots over the next few weeks would you like a list of all the links to include on your web page or would you prefer me to have a download page on mine?

Hi #hfbaker

Brilliant! This could help solve one of the big headaches.

Are the sizes the stamp size i.e. after removing the border put on by Steiner?

The one problem is cross referencing the frame sizes to actual stamps in the database.

Thinking it through, World Collector has an export facility so for example you could export a CSV file of just a single year from a single country from the database add the stamp sizes and or correct any data on the export. The bit that was missing was uploading to world collector.

This morning just wrote a small programme for the Apple MAC that will start your web browser at an upload page supplying all the keys etc so all you have to do is drag files to the page and click an upload button.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/u0au3iwzyr37ntr/WorldCollectorUploads.dmg/file

This can be used by anyone who has data to be included in the World Collector database.

If you would like to try this I can create a few CSV files where size data is missing for you to try.

re: making pages with World Collector software

# collectordave,
The sizes are the actual frame sizes from the Steiner pdf's. The stamp sizes can be calculated by subtracting 4 mm from each frame dimension.

In order to cross reference to the actual stamp you would need to relate the stamps in the Steiner pages (left to right, top to bottom) to the actual stamp. This is usually not too difficult since the Steiner pages are generally in chronological order.

If you can send me a few csv files needing size data, I will experiment with techniques for populating the size data from my extracts.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi CD,
Images in the same folder are fine, but I prefer to keep them in a subfolder for example "images".
if so, then one would include the folder name in the command:
STAMP_ADD_IMG (21 25 "images/94968.jpg" "" "" "")

The comments demarcating the pages are very helpful, I think that it could also be useful to add a few comments to the header section of the file as well, e.g the page size:
# page size A4
or
# page size 8 1/2 X 11"

You don't say what size the stamp boxes are, presumably, they are the actual stamp size, if so, sometimes, especially when using mounts, some people may want a box that is a little bigger. In which case they can use the STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST command to increase the size of all boxes in the album. To make it more convenient for users, maybe insert a
STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(0)
command in the file header with a comment informing the user that the value can be changed to adjust the size of all boxes.

I am happy to add a link to your download page, or to individual albums. If you have a bunch of abums perhaps I could add a dedicated "world collector albums" page to my site with links to the individual albums.

Clive

Hi

#hfbaker

Here are a couple of CSV files

Albania

https://www.mediafire.com/file/dgnqjbrompfxpux/Albania.csv/file

Andorra French PO single year (1998)

https://www.mediafire.com/file/5e35vw91auhkrzn/Andorra_French_PO_1998.csv/file

These are exported in UTF8 format using English UK. I use open Office to edit them just remember that all cells are text based.

The first column on the left is Ident please do not alter that at all.

Some actual dates missing as well.

I can remove the 4mm border when importing back into World Collector just subtracting 4mm off of each measurement.

Hope these are good for you.

Do you have an apple computer if so for uploading you can use the application I posted earlier if only windows I will be writing the upload app for windows during the next two weeks of lockdown and will post here.

If you need anything more please let me know.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi #clivel

Thanks for your thoughts.

With images I will follow your pointer, each album folder will then have one text file and a subfolder 'Images' for all the stamp images used.

Page size and stamp box size etc.

I am thinking to expand the header to include all the page settings including the Stamp Border and margins used etc.

Maybe we could create a standard for the World Collector exports e.g. Margins are all 10mm, Page size is allways A4 and Stamp Border is 4mm (good size for using stamp mounts this increases the size of the stamp box by 8mm so some care needed.

Thinking this as each row of stamps is calculated on the width available so increasing the stamp box size after export may push the stamp boxes over the edge of the page.

How does STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST affect images?

My goal is to have an album for every country in the World Collector database, several hundred at the moment, once I can get more size data.

As I get more data these will change, I am looking to have the download keys stay the same when files are uploaded so either way of listing would be good.

Kind Regards

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi CD,
I think that it would be useful to include an expanded header with standard World Collector settings.

Although I think that the stamp box borders should be 2mm i.e make all boxes 4mm larger, the 2mm border seems to be used by many of the mount suppliers e.g 21mm mounts are actually 25mm tall.

Effectively STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST increases the box size, the effect on the image is as if it was placed in a larger box. Most images are much larger than the stamp box anyway and are scaled-down, so it won't actually have much effect. If I remember correctly images are printed at 72dpi so a 1" wide stamp scanned at 300dpi would be just over 4" wide if printed actual size .
I also prefer images that are smaller than the actual stamp so that they are completely covered by the stamps when these are placed in the album. The ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING adjusts the space between the stamp image and the box by reducing the size of the image.

So what I suggest, is that the stamp boxes are set to the actual dimensions of the stamp, and then in the header:

STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(4.0)
ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING (9.0 9.0 false)

This will draw a box 4mm larger - 2mm border with the image 3mm smaller on all sides.

You may wonder how the 9.0 parameters in the ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING command adjust the size by 3mm, that is because internally I forgot to convert the value from points to mm, so values for this command are actually in units of 0.353mm. I must update the documentation because I can't change it without effecting existing albums.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi clivel

I have downloaded the latest version of AlbumEasy for the MAC so I can see the exports immediatly. Brilliant for adjusting an album I can see that just learning a few commands will allow me to add pages and move stamps around easily.

Tried your suggestion of:-

STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(4.0)
ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING (9.0 9.0 false)

Images do look better to me.

World Collector works by calculating the maximum number of stamps per row and then adding them so when adjusting the size of the boxes after creation of the album it does in some cases force some of the the boxes off the page.

Would it be better if the albums were created with a 2mm border around each stamp and add:-

STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(0.0)
ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING (9.0 9.0 false)

This would give all stamp boxes a 2mm border with the image 1mm smaller than the actual stamp size..

Expanded the header section to:-

################################################################################
#
# AlbumEasy file: Angola.txt
# ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Exported From World Collector
#
# Border Round Stamp = 2 Each stamp box is 4mm larger than the actual stamp
#
################################################################################

# Page Size A4
ALBUM_PAGES_SIZE (210.0 297.0)
# Page Size Letter
#ALBUM_PAGES_SIZE (217.0 280.0)

# Margins Top = 10 Left = 10 Bottom = 10 Right = 10
ALBUM_PAGES_MARGINS (10 10 10 10 )

# Border Around Page
ALBUM_PAGES_BORDER (0.5 0.1 0.0 1.0)

#Space Between Stamp Boxes & Rows in mm
ALBUM_PAGES_SPACING (5.0 5.0)

#Album Page Numbering
ALBUM_PAGES_NUMBER (HS 8 R)

#Page Title placed at the top of each page in the album
#Includes Font & text size
ALBUM_PAGES_TITLE (CN 32 "Angola")

# Adjust Stamp Box Sizes With to have 1mm larger border use STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(2.0)
STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(0)

#Image size setting 9 = 3mm smaller than the stamp box
# i.e. the image will be 1mm smaller than actual stamp 3mm - 2mm border
ALBUM_STAMP_IMG_SETTING (9 9 false)

#How to align each row of stamps
ROW_ALIGN_BOTTOM

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi CD,
That looks really great, I think that the heading section now contains enough information to make it easier for people to customise the albums if they so wish.

One suggestion though would be to change the comment above STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST to something like:
# The stamp boxes in this album are sized 4mm larger than the actual stamps giving a 2mm border
# To have the boxes drawn the actual stamp size use STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(-4.0)
# To increase the border, e.g by 1mm use STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(2.0)
STAMP_BOXES_SIZE_ADJUST(0)

The Angola album works very well, this does, however, lead to another suggestion. How hard would it be for you when outputting the text inside the stamp box, to always follow the word "on" with a "n" instead of a space?
So this: "40c on 400r on 200r" would change to "40c onn400r onn200r" and would be output to the PDF as:
40c on
400r on
200r
That way there is less chance of the text overflowing the box.

Actually we should probably take this conversation offline, I will message you my email address.
Regards,
Clive

Edit: Oops the forum software removed the backslashes from "n" which should be "backslash n" and also from "40c onn400r onn200r"

#hfbaker

Thank you for the help.

As you can see I am starting to produce AlbumEasy albums. I have reach 'C'

I need size data for these three years from Cambodia. These are all links to CSV files.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/s012r7qvdgm9fpw/Cambodia_1953.csv/file

https://www.mediafire.com/file/2axlq8hio3wt5u4/Cambodia_1954.csv/file

https://www.mediafire.com/file/inv6xukz153vy2x/Cambodia_1955.csv/file

I have sent you a message with a link to enable you to upload the files to my server area.

All you need do is click one of the links which will download the CSV file to your computer.

Then open the csv file with your spreadsheet programme.

You can then fill in the size data under 'Width' & 'Height'.

Save the file as a spreadsheet file do not bother with saving as a csv, some applications make a bit of a mess with unicode.

Upload the file to my server using the link in the message.

Any problems send me a message.

Hi All,

Started exporting albums in AlbumEasy format with the idea of having a one country album for every stamp collecting country.

My results so far can be downloaded here.

http://stampcollector.epizy.com/AlbumEasy.html

They are also available on the AlbumEasy website.

These are simple albums with the idea of geting you started.

They are complete as far as I can but I need more stamp size information, as I get this these albums will be updated.

Just one change to the programme these are produced using the World Collector list, but I collect Portugal and colonies using the Afinsa catalogue so just writing some extra code so when using the programme you can produce the album using any selected list. This maybe a while.

If there is no link as yet on the page for a country you collect or if you have a topical collection let me know and we can work together to produce that album either adding size information or creating the topical list.

Enjoy

The country list is best described as a composite list based on the last forty years.

Some examples:-

Ceylon/Sri Lanka are separate countries

Latvia 1918 - 1940 and Latvia 1990 on are also two separate countries.

Some catalogues also group countries into an aggregate such as Zululand is sometimes listed under South Africa my list shows all these as separate countries.

Where a geo-political historical grouping can be made I have attempted to make that distinction by using a different country name.

Clear as mud?

I installed the software (windows 10) and it downloaded databases but nothing is showing up. How do I check if the installation is correct. the help works.

A side issue is that when it launches it is under the task bar (mine is on top) and cannot easily be moved. I have to move it using alt=space bar.

Hi

The software is working if when you start it again it does not download the databases again.

The easiest way to check is to click the magnifying glass on the tool bar. This will show the search form change nothing just click the green tick on the search form after a little while it should display the first stamp in the database and tell you at the bottom that it is stamp number 1 of lots more.

Have you downloaded any images as yet?

As for the application being hidden under the taskbar, thank you for pointing that out. I am just working on the latest release and will have the application start center screen.

Hope this helps.

Just a quick note for anyone concerned that the album pages seem to end at the year 2000.

I am extending these as I obtain more data so they will grow.

I am also tackling the problem of topical albums as well hopefully adding EUROPA and SEPAC to the list as more data arrives.

Cheers to all

Hi ANGORE

Sorry for the late response.

Windows 10 has been giving me some problems. A lot to do with permissions and AV etc.

The setup programme has now been rewritten. It checks first that it can actually place the databases etc in the correct place and then if it can it downloads the basic application and databases.

One running you should be able to search the database.

To get images, albums and album easy files visit the help menu and select check for updates.

This launches another programme where you can select the portions such as images for countries you collect etc which will then be downloaded and installed

here is the link to the 64 bit version:-

http://www.mediafire.com/file/cs5ziwy4em3floe/WSC+Setup+(x64).exe/file

If it finds databases etc already in place it will back them up before installing the new ones.

The main database and other data is stored in your documents folder in a folder called 'World Stamp Collector'

Let me know how you get on.

PS if you need a 32 bit windows version i can share that link as well.

regards

To help with modifying the album after export I have added some white space between pages and indicated each page start on albums exported from World Collector.

To test I ran France through the mill and got this.

When I look at the file now I can see where to insert new pages if needed.

0 25 25
1 39 39
2 39 39
3 39 39
4 39 39
5 39 39
6 39 39

Clive

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi

Regards,
Clive

Edit: Oops the forum software removed the backslashes from "n" which should be "backslash n" and also from "40c onn400r onn200r"

re: making pages with World Collector software

Any problems send me a message.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hi All

Received updated files from #hfbaker no bother so the system is working.

I now have a helping page on the website where, if you can help add information to the database you can download current CSV files where I need help and there is a link to upload the edited files for me to process.

The help page is here.

Thanks to any that can help.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Enjoy

For your list of countries (issuing entities), is this list based upon a catalog list or composite. I see more than what is in Scott.

re: making pages with World Collector software

The country list is best described as a composite list based on the last forty years.

Some examples:-

Ceylon/Sri Lanka are separate countries

Latvia 1918 - 1940 and Latvia 1990 on are also two separate countries.

Some catalogues also group countries into an aggregate such as Zululand is sometimes listed under South Africa my list shows all these as separate countries.

Where a geo-political historical grouping can be made I have attempted to make that distinction by using a different country name.

Clear as mud?

The list is useful as a issuing entity list all by itself.

re: making pages with World Collector software

I installed the software (windows 10) and it downloaded databases but nothing is showing up. How do I check if the installation is correct. the help works.

A side issue is that when it launches it is under the task bar (mine is on top) and cannot easily be moved. I have to move it using alt=space bar.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Hope this helps.

re: making pages with World Collector software

Just a quick note for anyone concerned that the album pages seem to end at the year 2000.

I am extending these as I obtain more data so they will grow.

I am also tackling the problem of topical albums as well hopefully adding EUROPA and SEPAC to the list as more data arrives.

Cheers to all

re: making pages with World Collector software

PS if you need a 32 bit windows version i can share that link as well.

regards
