I wanted to know how other members store their albums and stockbooks. Especially those who live in a tropical climate like mine.

re: Album Storage?

Mine are stored on shelves upright. I have slipcases on albums with more valuable items. I live in the plains states and we get extremes here- hot summers and cold Winters. I've never had any issues with gum damage but then, I've usually lived in houses with central air.

I understand Hawaii is nice to live in but not so nice to take your stamps. Florida can be rough on them too but not bad if you take precautions.

re: Album Storage?

Having lived in Florida for over 40 years, I store my albums upright in cabinets and have never had an issue with stuck stamps in my albums, although I did check out a collection of albums that had been stored flat and virtually everything mint I looked at was damaged, either from the weight, humidity or a combination of both.

re: Album Storage?

Temps and humidity are the tests of the environment. I have lived on Long Island, NY my whole life. Up to a few years ago the humid summers were the primary problem for the stamps. A well AC's room was the only choice in summer. The other seasons were fine. I moved in with my second wife three years ago. It is a forced hot air system which presents a constant bone dry situation. This is okay for the stamps but has dried out the albums to the point of cracked binders (It is also hell on my cigars).

I also put silica packets in all of my boxes and drawers for covers and postcards. -I have never seen a ziplock big enough for an album, but I imagine the plastic zipper bags that sheets/bedding are bought in would work. Thinking

re: Album Storage?

If I got a storage cabinet, would you recommend I put silica gel packets in there to help keep out the moisture?

For a cabinet, I would set one of these inside. They really work. Image Not Found

re: Album Storage?

When Dianne had her stamp room she always had 2 or 3 Damp Rid containers on the floor area. I have open bookshelves that my albums are stored upright. The adjustable shelves are just so that I have room to slip the album in and out. As far as the dust is concerned, this room is perhaps the cleanest and void of all dust and trash. I also have the albums far away from the one window. For the decorative boxes, I also place the silica packets in them. Work wonders for moisture control.
