Bhutan is always the first place to check when it comes to stamps printed on odd materials.
The thangkas issue of 30Sep1969 is an example of stamps printed on silk.
Great topical, by the way!
thanks!
I have a number of their unusual stamps...I was so hoping another country might have made a few...as some of Bhutan stamps are pricey....
How about the smallest or the biggest stamp ?
Steve
I spent the past evening researching unusual stamps for my next mini project...WELL!!!! Check out Orapex 2013 Nicole Lacours and her 10 frame display . It is amazing!
Well, technically the US did - 1st issue silk paper documentary revenues.
Randy
One type has one or more threads of silk embedded in the substance of the paper, extending across the stamp. In the catalogues, this type of paper usually is designated as "with silk threads."
The other type, used to print many U.S. revenue stamps, has short silk fibres strewn over it and impressed into it during manufacture. This is simply called "silk paper.""
The most interesting thing about the silk paper is how the silk paper was made. While the paper was still wet someone quite literally tossed a handful of silk fibers onto the sheet of paper as it was being made! As opposed to the Experimental Silk Paper where it was "Sprinkled" onto the paper often leaving large areas without any fibers at all
I found this on another site and thought that I might share...now of to check my revenue stamps!!
Cheryl,
And don't forget porcelain, steel, aluminum, soccer ball material, seeds (that you could actually plant!), meteorite dust and rock dust,CD-rom....
....and I'm sure a few more I'm forgetting!
A member of our local stamp club here in Greenville has put together a display of all the unusual materials stamps have been created from. Quite an impressive display.
Randy
That is great....Tis my winter`s project....maybe even my next club display
Don't forget Tonga!
As far as smallest and largest stamps go; the smallest I think of is the 1952 Columbian 5 cent stamp shown. There were several different small building types like this but this one is considerably smaller than the rest. When I think of largest stamps I usually think of the 1865 U.S. periodicals. However the "Persian Rug" beats it by quite a bit. The Banknote is thrown in for comparison. The rug is a catalog cut out, unfortunately
Hi Guys,
Lots of different ones here:

Nice Five Hundred Antonius,
Just How big is it?
I think I have a stamp that is about 1cm square.....
Bit smaller than the Colombian I think...?
I'll look it up tomorrow and post a pic..
Cheers
Steve.
Thankyou guys...appreciate these photos as well
Hi Folks
A couple of small ones.........
I'm off to find a big one now.
Stevo
Couple of big ones:.....
"Don't forget Tonga! "
Got those...and England`s
invisible stamp as well....looking for the zero stamp of Holland...but alas...no luck!
Wow !! Brian when was this stamp issued?
Here are the details of Brian's stamp...::
Treasures from the archives
Issued 7th Sept. 2004
Also issued as a Peel & Stick stamp on the same date.
Another one issued 6th Sept. 2005 (different design) - I don't have one but it looks the same size in the catalogue - Also listed is an imperforate version of this one released 10th Jan 2006.
Be good if someone could show a pic of those..
Do you have 'em Brian ?
Cheers
Steve.
A possible contender for the 'largest stamp', actually issued for postage (not revenue) and having catalogue status:
Size: 3.25 inches by 4.25 inches. (83mm by 108mm)
...and following on from Stevo45's Tongan fruit salad; a nice bunch on cover:
What a great cover!
That sender really went bananas!
Sorry, it was just too good to pass up!

.
Canada's Largest Stamp.....
This stamp measures 128 mm x 48 mm.

Just wondering what countries may have issued stamps bearing seeds? I have located the Ghaf tree seed from United Arab Emirates and also one from the Netherlands...Might there be others?
Look in Monaco in the 1980s. There are a bunch of sets featuring trees and their seeds, like #1205-20 and a couple of souvenir sheets in later years.

Yeah, the blue whale is the size of a small banknote.
" ... Yeah, the blue whale is the size of a small banknote. ..."
And the clean postally used example cost me a small banknote.
Sigh. My biggest isn't big enough
Linn's October 26, 2015 reports two new stamp issues of unusual design:
New Zealand - stamp contains a replica of the home team jersey of the national rugby team. The jersey is printed on fabric.
Austria - stamp depicting lederhosen is printed on leather and encrusted with Swarovski crystals.
Thanks guys Austria has used crystals in several of its S/Sheets....Always searching......
Steve wanted to see the 2005 large Australian stamp "Treasures from the Archives"

"Austria - stamp depicting lederhosen is printed on leather and encrusted with Swarovski crystals."
This is one of the longer stamps I have. Sorry the picture is not brilliant, I had fun with the light reflecting off the ruler:
The above is part of a set with all of the gold medal winners from the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
Paul
Here are a few from Sierra Leone.
All the best,
Alyn
