It looks to me like the uniform of the Northwest Mounted Police, circa Boer War (1900), predecessor to the RCMP:

Excellent link Roy - thanks! I knew they were the predecessors of the RCMP - this link really gives a good introduction to the beginnings of the Dominion's own force.
The NWMP helmets didn't have a badge as this one does (at least, I can't find an image of one with a badge). This may be a local policeman, or I'm thinking a British soldier. Their pith helmets did carry badges.
Wasn't there a crossover between the NWMP & the military? Or perhaps a symbol of a higher rank in the NWMP?
Based on the time period & the insignia on his helmet, he might also be of the Royal Canadian Dragoons - a military unit
..
Thanks all for your help. I think I am getting closer to identifying this card

Hi all
I was looking through some boxes of postcards and came across this particular card showing an R.C.M.P. officer in an 1898 dress uniform, which I strongly believe to be the uniform and crest on the helmet to the card I originally posted in here.

Technically, the Northwest Mounted Police. (The Royal Northwest Mounted Police after the Boer War).
The RCMP did not exist until a merger of the NWMP and the Dominion Police in 1920. The merged entity was named the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at that time.
Roy
Roy, you are correct and the postcard states the N.W.M.P. I must be getting tired
I meant to make the correct statement, but, got carried away.

Hi all
I have had this card for a while, but, cannot determine if the image is that if a police officer, or a military officer? There aren't any inscriptions on the card at all and the postmark on the back is very feint and I cannot make it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
