I love old postal cards that communicated interesting things from the past. Here's an unassuming card from the Hall of Upchurch Lodge on August 7, 1900. It's a pretty routine monthly business notice,asking for $1 monthly dues, which was a lot of money back then. Otherwise unremarkable until you read the obituary column for the month. I have no idea how large the population of this lodge was, but they suffered four deaths that month.
Note the ages of the deceased and the causes of death.
Age 42 Nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys)
Age 24 Consumption (a wasting disease, especially pulmonary tuberculosis)
Age 45 LaGrippe (influenza)
Age 39 Chronic Bronchitis
It's sad to see the young ages and the causes of death that we've pretty much gotten under control in the 115 years since! We are very fortunate to live in these times!

That's a very interesting postcard and article. I guess secret societies is what people used to do before they invented television?
