I just received a mailing from a trader friend in Baghdad of recent (2010-2015) issues from his country. While reviewing his website for some info on these, I was surprised by the smaller press runs of issues. It looks like the 2010 quantities issued were anywhere between 75,000 and 200,000 while the quantities for 2015 seem to be only 30,000 per stamp.

A link to his website with new issue info can be found here...http://shirwanistamps.webege.com/list8.htm Just follow the links at the bottom of the page for the next time period.

Besides Iraq, what other countries have you noticed that have reduced the amount of stamps printed recently? I believe this will impact topic collectors more than WW collectors, any thoughts?

re: Modern stamps being issued with smaller press runs

I should have thought people in the Middle East have other things on their mind at present than how many stamps to issue for stamp collectors. I have no evidence, but I'd suggest Syria might be issuing rather fewer stamps these days.

The impact social and political upheaval has on the issue of stamps, whether for postal use (decreasing anyhow, surely, as electronic communication increases), or for collectors, is an interesting point. As I'm sure I've mentioned before, the invasion of Russia in June 1941 resulted in no more than six Soviet stamps being issued in the next 17 months - two of which were probably in the pipeline anyhow, two of which were directly related to the politico-military situation, and two less explicably commemorating a medieval poet. Obviously other factors took precedence over stamp issue.

I wonder how many stamp collections have been destroyed or left behind in Syria in these last few months? Or how Libya or Somalia (to name but two) are getting along with their stamp production. Perhaps someone here has an answer for the latter question - I doubt we shall ever find out the former.

Many countries have cut down on their press runs. Too bad many countries don't cut down on the number of stamps they issue. Maybe then collectors would buy stamps from them.

There is an easy way to prod countries to lessen the number of stamps, souvenir sheets and mini panes they issue annually.
Collect postally used.

LOL, Charlie. That would severely limit the number of modern world wide stamps one can collect down to maybe six stamps in the past 25 years!

Non, mon ami
In the distance I can hear a thousand Machins echo "no, not quite" as another thousand "Mariannes" chortle with unrestrained glee.
Even the Queens of Denmark and Sweden allow a slight snicker to escape their usually solemn demeanor.
It depends if one is distracted by colorful decorations like a child gazing at the sparkling ornaments of a freshly cut and newly decorated Christmas tree while missing the recently delivered Kraft wrapped UPS parcel from a wealthy uncle.

It is a bit more difficult to assemble a set of definitives that were actually used to pay the delivery fee or actual mail being delivered, than to order a set of newly minted, bright colorful commemoratives supposedly from Outer Thumbelina rom a new issue dealer or the OFFICIAL Outer Thumbelina Postal Agency in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
In several threads members remark at the pleasure in finding that last illusive example that completes a set or a page. The thrill of the chase is real with an emotional afterglow that can start as you open the envelope from a new issue dealer or find that paper bauble at a dealer's table, but it is also there for the many collectors who often start by choosing used as an financial consideration and soon begin too appreciate that thousands of seemingly common run of the mill stamps that were actually used in some far off town, actually printed for that purpose and are sometimes much harder to find.
