This is a message to all SOR members out there.

I've looked through the different topics and threads on this line; and my mind is screaming, "Danger! Danger!"

Do you realize that you have just told the world that you will be away from your home and valuables for a specific period of time? Anyone can access the DBs. Join up and we'll give you even more information about you. That should make a Google search of you all the easier for any thieves or hackers. Remember the stories of thieves breaking into homes because they knew loved ones would be at a funeral? This is the new reality. Tell us that you are on vacation for two weeks on the DB and I'll find out where you live. Visiting family? All the better.

What I would sincerely suggest is that all members do not post their whereabouts if they are away. Maybe an innocuous message about your availability is better. Just say you are busy; but don't say where you are enjoying or not enjoying being busy. Most of the messages posted are to let other members know that auctions or approvals will not be finalized right away. Others are rightfully bragging about new grandkids or hard-earned vacations. For the latter, we'd much rather hear you brag (with photos) after the fact. For the former, we'll get it. You're not around - be patient.

This has been on my mind for a while. Go to the members list and Google any one of us. You'll learn a lot that we didn't intend you to learn. Just use the info for good, not evil... Angel

re: Announcing your whereabouts

I agree with Andrejs. However this sort of care required is not just confined to the net. Careless talk may not cost lives, but it may cost you your possessions. Only the people who need to know you are not there should know.

I am by no means paranoid but when I go on one of my not infrequent holidays, my next door neighbour ( who's family have a surfeit of cars ) parks a car on my drive so that it looks like there is someone home to casual passers-by. My son who has a key empties my doormat of mail twice a week, and my neighbour opposite who knows everyone's business keeps an eye open. Forget Neighbourhood Watch, the best security is a nosy neighbour !

Having said all that, the vast majority of people are as honest as the day is long. A policeman friend of mine has told me that 95% of domestic thefts ( a considerable number) are carried out by less than 1% of offenders ( Like 0.several zeros 1 % of the population at large).

Stay safe and keep schtum !
