I was reading the discussion about the penny black and that got me day dreaming. Which stamps would you like to have but can't afford or can't get for one reason or another? Maybe one day we will be able to have them. 2 of ones I would like most are USA Scott # 1 and 2 in Mint shape. I would go for used first but my dream is to one day have them both in Mint.
Then the zepps and the penny black and then any other stamps in the thousands of dollar range. We can dream can't we. Happy

re: Dream stamps

I own a used USA Scott #1, and a 65 cent Zeppelin on flown cover. I'd love to have a Scott #1 on a nice cover, and the rest of the Zeps on flown covers!

And while we are dreaming.. I would like a full set of Columbians and the Series of 1902 Definitives! Happy

re: Dream stamps

That's a fascinating question!

I have to admit there's nothing in the nineteenth century that appeals to me. I once thought of buying a penny black on cover from a dealer who was selling them by name of addressee - an interesting USP - but he didn't have anything addressed to a Mr Greenwood.

Currently I am casting envious glances at this set from January 1935:

Ostensibly it commemorates the 20th anniversary of the outbreak of WW1, but it's usually listed as "Anti-War Propaganda". It's a remarkable series of designs, I think by the caricaturist Yuliy Ganf (1898-1973) - I say 'I think' because the catalogues give his initial as 'I' rather than 'Y' or even 'Yu'. Yuliy Ganf was a graphic artist, illustrator and primarily, it seems, satirical cartoonist. Nothing I can source from the internet suggests that he ever designed postage stamps, although the set I show above certainly has a satirical cartoonist's style about it.

The difficulty comes when you look at the other stamps designed by 'I.Ganf', which are decidedly formal and look as if they are the work of someone completely different!

It's comparatively cheap to buy in used condition, but more expensive in mint (which is what I collect). Delcampe has sets ranging from 625 euros down to 350 euros, which works out at roughly $650 or £450 down to $375 or £250. This would tempt me, just about, if I could see what I was buying, but I'm a bit timid at spending that much via the internet.

The design style is unique among Soviet stamps of the period. The Soviets were apprehensive ( = 'paranoid') about militarism in Europe at the time, but I'd want to read up more about that before being sure of exactly what prompted this issue. For both reasons, then, it's the set I'd most like to be given for Christmas!

re: Dream stamps

There are a few stamps that I will never be able to afford, save winning the lottery. This is the one I would most like to own:

I would love to own a mint one of these

I would probably have to settle for a used copy.
