Holey smokes! You will have to pay 90c to mail a letter within the country? Whew! Plus you have to pay taxes on the stamps when you purchase them? That makes our 49c rate seem like a pittance.

re: Postal Rate Increase Effective January 11, 2016

The current price for first class 'regular' size postage within the UK is 63p. That does though permit up to 100g. but no more than 5mm thickness. That equates to Canadian $1.27 and US$.95. No doubt these will increase in the new year.

Aside from the different pricing from country to country, wouldn't it be nice to have a global service level structure; where sizing is standardised; where types of service (normal, registered, signed for, tracked etc) are standardised?

I think I'll start lobbying for a new organisation: I'll call it a Universal Postal Union, or UPU for short.

re: Postal Rate Increase Effective January 11, 2016

Yes Michael - Those are SOME of Canada Post's 2016 postage rates.

Theresa - the amount of tax a Canadian pays depends on which Province they live in. It depends whether the province has the Harmonized Sales Tax (Federal & Provincial combined) or if the two taxes are separated which result in that province only paying GST (Federal Tax) on postage. It's a complicated tax system especially when some postal services are subjected to fuel surtaxes on top of sales taxes.

There's two things in life that are certain if you live in Canada - death & taxes!!!

I couldn't find anything on the Canada Post website either. They've removed the changes for lettermail.

Parcel post rates and other services are still increasing on January 11, 2016.

Hmmmm Interesting.

I wonder what is happening with all the printed stamps that were made to accmomodate the new rates? I bet some will find the market via the back door, and create a speculative market for stamp dealers. (That has previously happened in 1994 with the 2 denominations of the christmas stamps (52c and 90c that were pulled and re-issued as 50 and 88c)

Hi Gilles!

David from Chris Green Stamps, here. Happy New Year!!

I suspect that the postal rate increase will happen, just delayed a few months. Just my guess, though.

Gilles:

My sister works at Canada Post in Mississauga. She forwarded me an e-mail "to all employees" stating that the 85-cent to 90-cent domestic letter rate will not go ahead as planned on the 11th of January. The gov't wants to study it. No mention of the other rates going up or not.

Everyone is in a holding pattern. I don't think anyone at Canada Post knows what is going on.
