Hello Blair,
I have cross over items in my collection. It's like two for the price of one.
The problem is what collection they get added to. I solved that by making a scan of the cover and putting it in one collection and the original in the other.
Vince
that's a good idea I hadn't thought of. Thanks!
Yesterday at the Florex stamp show I purchased this cover because of the penny red (I usually only collect US material but love the look of the penny red and the penny black). Today I did some research and found out this item also belongs in my document collection.
The letter was written by a solicitor (attorney) in an attempt to collect a debt. The attorney's name was Robert Aitken. The Russell and Aitken Law firm is still in business today in Falkirk and elsewhere. It's the oldest law firm in Scotland to retain it's original name, being founded in 1802.
A great addition to my antique document collection
The letter has three postmarks, Edinburgh on the front, Linlithgow, and Falkirk on the back.
side notes:
Linlithgow is the site of Linlithgow Castle and birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scotts and is the source of the surname Lithgow. Falkirk was the site of the Battle of Falkirk in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. One of the last battle the Jacobites won before their complete defeat at Culloden.
I love history...
