BuckaCover.com - 80,000 covers priced 60c to $1.50 - Easy browsing 300 categories

Here is an illustrated advertising cover for the Eden Hotel in Montreux Switzerland, dated April 29, 1969. According to Google, the Montreux Casino is 100m south of the hotel. Therefore the building to the right in the picture should be the Casino.

Those of you of a Rock 'n' Roll age might recognize the Montreux Casino as the subject of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water", one of the greatest guitar pieces of all time (in my mind), which tells the story of the burning of the Casino during a Frank Zappa concert on Dec. 4, 1971.

Anybody know the town enough to confirm my supposition?

Dudes!Rock On

I can finally use the "rock on" emoticon to its full capacity.

Clive, you rock! And I mean that in a "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" context, not a One Direction half-hearted effort.

Roy, You might be surprised to learn (I certainly was) that "Smoke on the Water" didn't even make Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitar songs. Nor was there any Jethro Tull, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, or Doors. At least Layla and Purple Haze made the list!

re: Anybody know Montreux Switzerland?

Was never a fan of Rolling Stone (the magazine). From Wikipedia:

In 2004, the song was ranked number 434 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, ranked number 4 in Total Guitar magazine's Greatest Guitar Riffs Ever, and in March 2005, Q magazine placed "Smoke on the Water" at number 12 in its list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks.

What do they know?

Roy

Now I just have to decide if I want to sell the cover or not!

That is indeed a bit strange, because when you state that "irresistable riffs" are one of the main selection criteria, 'Smoke on the Water' or 'Locomotive Breath' certainly would have earned their places in that list. Not so sure about Vanilla Fudge or the Doors though.
On the other hand, a list that contains both Link Wray, Dick Dale as well as Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth and Ramones can't be completely wrong Thumbs Up

Deep Purple is also not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Surprisingly (not), Rolling Stone probably has a lot to do with that. If Deep Purple had never written another song, they should be in the R&RHOF just for the Smoke on the Water riff. The fact that Frank Zappa gets mentioned in the song is just a bonus.

i hadn't heard the names Dick Dale and Link Wray before, but their music was instantly recognizable as I meandered down UTube. I don't recall the Ramones as guitar afficianadoes; maybe they deserve another listen.
