I'm much more active with the approvals, but I would happily offer to help our overworked auctioneer and webmaster. This sounds like an interesting project and one that would be quite helpful to those searching for a specific region.
I would like to add that if I commit to work on this project, I will try to see it through barring health, family or other unavoidable issues that might prevent me from completing the promised work. Also, for the sake of harmony, I'll graciously withdraw my offer to volunteer if requested.
For the benefit of anyone who might like to help, what are the preferred qualifying criteria (if any)?
First, I am not volunteering, too much going on right now.
However, I would like to urge members to volunteer to assist Tim in this much needed enhancement. In addition to helping the club move forward, volunteers, especially those who have not previously contributed, provide fresh ideas and energy.
Bobby
Ningpo,
There is no real qualifications needed. The work will be to identify countries who currently issue or have issued stamps and determine what Category the country should be in. Without wanting to preempt the project team, I'm thinking that the team would divide the world into geographic regions for team members to work on. They'd then bring their work results back to the group for review and comment.
A lot of people have been wanting to separate classic stamps from non-classic stamps. I think this would be a good opportunity to do so.
Hope this helps.
Tim.
When Tim described this, he mentioned that the categories could be used for both entering lots AND for searching lots. so, taking the question about where does one put Ireland, the project would give us, at a minimum, 2 distinct listings: Irish Republic (in Western Europe) and Northern Ireland (GB). There might be some add'l demarcation, as with US stamps, where you might expect US to 1900; US 1901 to 1940; US 1940 to wall paper. I'm making this up, but what the team devises will be how the categories will be subdivided.
I'll also say that this is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a time-limited project.
David
I'll help. Sounds fun.
-Ernie
So are you volunteering Ian?
I'll help. It is a much needed enhancement. I agree the easiest route is to take what Ebay has done, which is pretty good since they added more categories. Delcampe is over the top and even with its hundreds if not thousands of categories, they are not consistent.
Greg
Is this going to help (to a point) with lots not posted to the wrong categories?
Randy
like all other technology, Randy, it will help if people use it....
I wanted to thank Theresa, Ernie, and Greg for volunteering for this. This is one of those things where Tim can do the coding, but it helps that others give him the information to be entered.
David
Hey Tim, I am useless with technology but pretty adept at "human factors engineering" stuff so happy to help if needed.
Hey Tim. Sorry that "The Curse of LeMaven" has struck your efforts - as soon as I volunteer the offers dry up...
Let me know when you want to get started. Anything I should look and think about in advance to set the tone?
Cheers, Dave.
P.S. Hope you had a great Christmas. I found a little something in a box of US FDCs that I slipped in with the CAPEX sheet. Probably ubiquitous, but if you sell it on auction here for over $1,000 send me half (in US$ of course...)
You can add me too as a Volunteer.Would be happy to help our members.
Thanks
Auro
David and Aurobindo, thanks all for volunteering, but I believe the working group has already been formed from the first there volunteers (Theresa, Ernie, & Greg).
Tim, you might want to consider using David and Aurobindo to "test" the resulting product. From my past service as a "tester," I can say that this part is actually fun - you get to try to "break" what Tim creates in order to find the bugs.
Great to see the enthusiasm here!
Randy I have wondered about the posting to the wrong groups myself. I also do not know how people search for things to buy at auction. For me, I simply type in what I am looking for in the search engine. This insures that I will get every item no matter where it gets posted. I know myself when I post lots here I have to go in and change them sometimes because I forget to change it when I change countries. I need to keep two tabs open when I do auctions as it is an awkward process to change them when you can't go back once you have left the previous screen. Will everyone do that? I am guessing no. I believe people search on a country or they go to a specific seller to see what they are selling. I will be experimenting with that maybe this week by intentionally posting 10 lots to the wrong category. My guess is that it will make no difference. Without seeing a prototype of what the new auction screen will look like its difficult to say whether people will use it correctly. Time will tell
"BobbyBarnhart: you might want to consider using David and Aurobindo to "test" the resulting product"
Sorry, Dave. Yes I did mean you. We have too many Daves and Davids, and I get confused. But then I am old and have an excuse.
Bobby, having too many of us, you're not planning on culling the herd, are you?
you can call me flower
"...you're not planning on culling the herd, are you?"
switching from Red reindeer-decorated sweaters to winter cammies
Red reindeer sweaters, huh? Interesting image you've given us, David. Do you have any red reindeer PJs with feet?
The red reindeer sweaters would have gone nice with my brown reindeer skirt. Hmmm oops, sorry wrong web site...
David - I'm sure you'll make a very pretty flower. Just know we're all very supportive of you
I don't know, some of those flowers are carnivorous you know.
David, you wrote:"you can call me flower"

Lumberjack? Oh noooooooo now I'm humming the Monty Python Lumberjack song. Nooooooooo
So, is Monty Python eligible for the volunteer spot?
Monty Python is eligible for any spot.
Hi Everyone,
I’m looking for volunteers to assist me on a new project in the Auction. I’m going to add the ability in the New Auction Lot program to select the country that the stamp in the lot is from. This would be an optional extra piece of information, but if used it would automatically place the Lot in the appropriate Category. I’m not going to increase the number of Auction Categories because there are too many things throughout the system that are dependent on them, but this will allow a kind of subcategory by selecting the County.
It will work on Country and Date Range. For example, Ireland up to a certain date would go into the United Kingdom category. Ireland after a certain date would go into Western Europe.
As well as the New Auction Lot program I will apply this to the Bulk Loader. I will also apply it to the Auction views so you can select only stamps from “Pitcairn Island†etc. I’m still thinking about the best way to do this.
If you would like to assist in this project, please respond to this post letting me know. I will setup a project discussion area on the Discussion Board that the project team will be able to use. The project team will need to select a leader who will be responsible for coordinating the effort and work out with the team who does what. I will be a technical resource for answering technical questions. I’ll let you know what I need in order to be able to implement the solution, but apart from that I won’t be part of the project team.
Any volunteers?
Regards … Tim.
