It's not a grill in the front-of-book sense. Rather it is a waffle-style cancel meant to prevent the stamp's reuse. Usually considered the same as cut or punch cancels by collectors, i.e. not desirable.

usrevenues, thanks for your quick response. I knew about the cut and punch cancels, but have never seen this type of cancel on any revenue. The more I look I can see that the holes and mounds are more rounded which would make it more of a waffle-style cancel as you say. My first, so will keep in my "unusual" category.

Dan (usrevs) is correct.
In my opinion, these are less common than the usual cut or punch cancels - at least in my experience.
I find them quite interesting, actually.
