Thanks for posting these Peter. I don't get Linn's, the APS magazine or any of the other publications so I'm seeing these here first.
The planets are stunning! It's my understanding that those images are artificially colorized to show contrasts. I love 'em.
I think the Star Trek stamps could have been better. I love the theme but how about Kirk doing battle with the Mugato?
Dad told all of us for years to stay away from anything modern because it was all just "junk" and a waste of time. For years I followed his advice faithfully but recently I've gotten into some of the newer topical issues and have got a really neat topical collection going. I like alot of the newer stamps.

Ernie I like your suggestion about ST! Or Kirk fighting the Gorn too!
Yeah! There's really nothing wrong with those stamps, per se...just looks a bit like a missed opportunity. Since the show was such a tailblazer with respect to social issues how about a close up of Lt. Uhura in a ready stance with a fazer set to "kill"?
I mean, a simple black sillouette outline of the Enterprise? Really?

When I told my husband that the colors of the Star Trek issue were a bit garish, he reminded me that those were the colors of the uniforms in the original series. Sheesh I sure did a head slap!
Oh, yeah...thanks Anglophile. I forgot about "the money". Even so, having images placed on a US postage stamp is..the holy grail, the pinnacle of success.. you'd think that all parties involved would have wanted it so badly that they would have found a way to make it work. I think being pictured on a stamp would have only served to strengthen the brand and make it more valuable.
Anglophile, you're our resident legal eagle, especially with Bobby gone now. Good point about the royalty for personal image use. So for the Harry Potter series, with photos of all those characters, would the USPS have been required to get permission from each? From only the production company? The author of the books?
Peter
I understand all that, but can we not get ONE stamp with Ensign Rand?!?
Lars
Yeoman
And, yeah, I was thunkin' the same.
Anyone see the Linn's online article about the Canada Star Trek stamp with Kirk and the Enterprise? How is it that Canada can put out a stamp with a picture, and the US is issuing, well, we have all seen them.... Do copyright issues extend to all countries? That was one of the reasons given for the US design.
Keep in mind that William Shatner is still alive AND is a Canadian citizen.
David
Keep in mind, too, the US Postal Service no longer issues Olympics stamps with the Olympic Rings logo, because they refuse to pay the licensing fee. That, I think, tells you all you need to know about other licensed properties.

To update the matter of rights regarding Star Trek. Paramount no longer owns the rights to Star Trek. The Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) owns the rights to the Star Trek "universe".
CBS has granted free use of Star Trek to those wanting to write stories, produce movies and online episodes of any aspect of the show, fan art, etc. One caveat is that such works may not be created for profit. Any efforts of producing anything related to Star Trek for profit must be negotiated and contractually agreed upon with CBS. I'm not sure if the images used by USPS are free of any requirement for the payment of royalties. Obviously, however, use of images of the actual actors would require royalties paid to the actors and/or their estates and probably CBS as well.
I know of this as I am a minor (I don't get listed in the credits) contributing producer of the Star Trek Renegades movie series, and am considering doing the same with the Star Trek Returns television-style episodes.
I am just disappointed compared to the Harry Potter series. They could have done at least 20 sheet set of the original generation...no Spock, no group shot of red shirts?
This is not the first time that Star Trek has been commemorated on a US stamp. Scott #3188e from the 1960s sheet of the Celebrate the Century series. Shows the original NCC-1701 USS Enterprise.
The USPS has finally changed the philatelic store to reflect the new 47c rate.
And the Shirley Temple stamp will be issued soon. I've been watching/listening to a few of her old films while puttering on stamps. Amazon has a good selection available free for prime members. Adorable stuff. (I can hear you fellas groaning LOL)
We are Shirley Temple fans at my house, more so my wife. I grew up watching all those old movies usually on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We have a collection of DVD's that we are trying to get our granddaughters to watch. They are more into the Disney movies at the present time. One is four and the other is 5 1/2.
Vince
I've always loved Shirley Temple.....even have a vinyl copy of her 'hit' songs!
My favorite was always "Animal Crackers in my Soup"!
A few years ago, Canada Post purchased the rights in Canada for a series of Superman stamps. The rights for the stamp were only for sale within Canada. Those who wanted to order them and have them sent outside of Canada, say, to the United States, or Great Britain, were told that the stamps were for sale within Canada only.
I suspect this may be the case, here with the Star Trek stamps, but I haven't heard anything official.
Incidentally, if you're wondering why Canada Post issued Superman stamps, the original artist, Joe Shuster, was from Toronto, Ontario.
David
I don't believe there is any restriction in sales for the coming US Star Trek issue.
The Superman issue sure was a stinker for non-Canadian collectors. However, a friend of mine in Canada did procure a booklet and coil for me. In addition, the Superman stamps were included in the quarterly new issue pack that I received from Canada Post.
Linn's has a picture of one of the new Star Trek stamps from Canada Post. Nice!

The article says that there also is a coil with a picture of NCC-1701.
There's also will be a Mr Spock stamp.

I don't think I've ever been as excited about new stamp issues, let alone FOUR new issues, as I am this year; check out the 2016 US Postage Issues that will include:
The planets, sans Pluto (so now they fit in a 16 sheet!)
And an entire issue just for Pluto!
Then pets
and last but not least, Star Trek!
I know, there are some who decry the popularization of stamps by including such things as Star Trek or pets, but I'm happy for these.
