Guess what the following Great Britain sets of this decade have in common!

1. 'Britain Alone' 2010
2. Great British Railways 2010
3. 50th Anniversary of the Royal Shakespeare Company 2011
4. 100th Anniversary of Air Mail 2011
5. Merchant Navy 2013
6. 100th Birth Anniversaries 2014
7. 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain 2015
8. Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition 2015

Grey, grey, grey, square and grey, all of 'em. OK, some not as square as others, but mostly square. And all grey.

You'll have spotted a gap in that chronology. In 2012 we had four sets, half of whose stamps were coloured, and half... grey!

Eyes open for 2016, then, when we get 'British Humanitarians' next month!

Grey! And square!

It's enough to make you take up Solomon Islands...

re: Fifty shades of Grey

As we are in the 50 shades mode, I thought all the English would appreciate the humour of Pam Ayres.
Edited to state that it apparently was not written by Pam but by a gentleman called John Summers.

'An Ode to Fifty Shades of Grey'

The missus bought a Paperback
down Shepton, Saturday,
I had a look in her bag;
...T’was “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

Well I just left her to it,
...At ten I went to bed.
An hour later she appeared;
The sight filled me with dread…

In her left hand she held a rope;
And in her right a whip!
She threw them down on the floor,
And then began to strip.

Well fifty years or so ago;
I might have had a peek;
But Mabel hasn’t weathered well;
She’s eighty four next week.

Watching Mabel bump and grind;
Could not have been much grimmer.
Things then went from bad to worse;
She toppled off her Zimmer!

She struggled up upon her feet;
A couple minutes later;
She put her teeth back in and said...
I must dominate her!!

Now if you knew our Mabel,
You’d see just why I spluttered,
I’d spent two months in traction
For the last complaint I’d muttered.

She stood there nude, naked like;
Bent forward just a bit ….
I thought oh well, what the hell,
and stood on her left tit!

Mabel screamed, her teeth shot out;
My god what had I done!?
She moaned and groaned then shouted out:
“Step on the other one!”

Well readers, I can’t tell no more;
About what occurred that day.
Suffice to say my jet black hair,
Turned fifty shades of Grey.

re: Fifty shades of Grey

My joking aside, GB stamps do seem to be going through a grey and square period. However, I rather like this set but then I do have a penchant for maritime subjects on stamps.

The images that have been used do seem somewhat sanitised and almost staged even though the images were taken by Shackleton's official photographer, Frank Hurley (no Box Brownie here and perhaps that's the problem):

This perhaps illustrates one of my previous rants about GB stamp design in this day and age. Was there actually a designer involved, or just a committee of National Geographic type photo editors?

Clive, That's exactly how I feel about most GB issues, and this style of production in particular!

I don't object to the images (many of which are historical and available only as black-and-white photographs), merely the incredible lack of concern displayed by Royal Mail and, as I take it, their cheapskate policy of rejecting proper designers in favour of photographs on which no work has to be done. The habit is tiresome, especially when (as I have been doing lately) you compare British issues to those of other European countries. France and Germany (to take only two examples) have a far more creative, interesting and imaginative way of going about commemorating people and occasions than does Britain.

Vic, I'm not a Pam Ayres fan by any means, and I think the same can now be said of 'John Summers'! I also read the first page or two of the book in question, and Ms James is a rotten writer, as well. Sad

All round misery, then, me! I'm off to Stampex now, so steer clear if you see me... Winking
