LET'S HEAR YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING BETTER COVERS!!!
Even if you are using older stamps, you can still make a nice cover by adding seals and changing placement. Try to avoid placing the stamp too close to the edge of the envelope.
Here is one suggestion for improvement for USA members - shift your stamp over to where the city and date spray is applied. You avoid the heavy wavy killer cancels and gain a city and date cancel - the closest we can get to Circular Date Cancels with modern spray cancelling technology. I put a few seals in the gap - bonus tied in seals!
Here's a scan of my little gage. I try to avoid placing the stamp in the red "killer zone". And the lucky fella getting this cover should have an imperf pair with a light cancel. Sweet!

PS There was/is the Art Cover Exchange - members would design cachets or tie the stamps into a drawing and send them out to various correspondents.

I have a hard time with this. If I don't use a recent commemorative Canada Post puts an obliterating cancel or no cancel at all on the cover. So when I send out of country I try to affix at least one recent commemorative and top it up with a few recent definitives.
Also, the post office I drop off mail at is in a convenience store where they do not cancel the mail. They just collect it and it all goes to the big downtown sorting station to be cancelled and sorted. That makes it hard to control the type of cancel on it.
But I try my best to make a nice cover.
I have received several gorgeous covers this last year since starting to collect again.
Notice they bent it!

This one arrived in the mail today. The back had a sticker from the American Lung Association. How fitting, since the sender had no way of knowing about my lung disease.

Interesting! That person must've bought their discount postage the same place I did. Mine came with 100 of those Pioneer Jupiter plate blocks. I cringe every time I lick the back of one!

Well, this back fire on me, I can't upload the images becouse they are too big, most have several stamps including SS, this one in particular has a whole Star Wars sheet plus few extra stamps.
If someone can tell me how to reduce the oimages I may be able to upload them, they really nice covers.

This came in the mail today. The Bernie Parent stamp was a great touch. I remember The Broad Street Bullies. hat trick in '76 never happened though. Thanks David,

Here is an interesting, but I imagine not quite legal, usage. From what I can tell, this person used a FDC from 1984, added 32 cents postage and mailed. The added postage never got cancelled as is the case with most of the covers I get from Canada.

I've gotten three covers like that from an ebay seller in Canada. I brought them to my local club for a bit of show and tell and everyone was flabbergasted - especially the snowbird Canadians!

I don't see that it is illegal to re-use/recycle envelopes. There was no attempt to defraud the government out of funds, since the sender did apply a legitimate rate postage stamp to send it on it's way. I have also done this many times, when I had a bunch of FDC's sitting around, in my way, or just for amusement's sake.
If you would like to receive one of these type covers, send me a message and I will be happy to do so. Please, only a limit of ten people requesting these.

Mike...I'm pretty sure that the proper postage rate from Canada to the US is more than 32 cents. The one dollar stamp was cancelled in 1984, so is therefore no longer valid for postage.

I believe it's perfectly legal to reuse an envelope or card as long as you add the correct postage. Here's a "Round Robin" card I have in my collection.

When you don't see a hand cancel on a Canadian cover, look for the bar code on the envelope - that proves it's been cancelled, such as the one above.
I always go to the drug store post office and have everything hand cancelled.
Now if only I could get the post man to stop shoving envelopes that say do not bend on them into my little post box but rather ring me up and let me come down to get it, I'd have really beautiful covers. I never collected covers before until SOR members started sending me beautiful creative covers and this began my accumulation!

Here ya go Vince! It is an interesting card.
And this article on the card came along with it when I bought it "you-know-where"! I paid something like $20 for it. And of course it has my favorite Franklins, so just had to have it!

I like it Tom! That is the sorta stuff I like to add to my eclectic collection. Interesting article from Linn's. It mentions Charles Fricke in the article. He is a member of our local club, Greater Philadelphia Stamp And Collectors Club. He is up in years now and don't make meetings anymore but some of the members visit him on a regular basis. An interesting man.

Who wants to join me to make our Stamporama club mailings the best possible? I'm on a mission to get the members to start sending better covers to each other. I know we can do it!
