I'm getting back to paying attention to my Israel collection and have a lot of either early stuff like what shows in the front of a Bale Catalogue that I have, Interim period, local issues, Diaspora series.....and I would like to get them into some kind of order/presentation in my albums. I can scan the pages if anyone wants to see them, but I'm keeping them Happy I would, however, like help in identifying what I have. For some of you former Stampoffers folks, I think I got them from Big Jose.

Michael, I know exactly what you mean about nothing going as planned! I only had time to scan a couple of pages, but here they are. I decided to do ones I hadn't seen shown elsewhere. I love the alef-bet ones because I realized when looking at them last night, they are the names of towns in Israel. Some of them I was able to figure out, others, I wasn't familiar with the place. The red ones, definitely KKL, but not sure for what. Pity that the sheets on the alef-bet ones were separated, but I'm glad to have them.Image Not FoundImage Not Found

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!

Hi Dor

The Aleph-Bet issue is from 1948, Perf 11½. Also comes in 3 other colours/shades. Yours are listed as Brown-Yellow and Blue. Both were overprinted for Postal use at some point to the values of 5 or 10 Mils in Violet (Jerusalem).

Both were issued by the Head Offices in Jerusalem.

An earlier issue of similar design and Layout (sheet 4x7] was issued in 1940.

Your other lot came out of the New York Office and is most interesting. You have 3 panes of an Album/Booklet that consisted of 11 panes in total. It was entitled 'Quiz replica' and it can be assumed that the labels formed answers to questions where they were affixed to. What happened if one got the wrong answer is anyone's guess !!
The panes were stapled to the Album, you can see the holes on the larger selvedge area.
They were issued in 1939 and most likely used in Jewish Schools or other (possibly religious) Educational facilities.
Your panes are numbers One, two and three which is rather odd unless you have the full set hiding somewhere !

Very nice.

Londonbus1.....also very nice !Big Grin

Yes, Michael you are very nice. I don't have any more from the "educational" set anywhere..... Which panel is which? Now I will go to that other discussion and glean what you told the person there under the "does anyone know Hebrew?" thread, because I think I do have some of those. Then I will scan the others for you....unless you want to see all the ones I have!

Martyn, I don't collect them per se (that is, look for them to buy), but since the only country I collect is Israel, when they fall in my lap, I'll keep them since when I die and my kids have to sell my collection, they will add some value to it. Also, yes they are really great for history and interest, and it gives me a good chance to practice my Hebrew....heheh.

Bobgggg, Hello old Stampoffers friend. Good to see you. Thanks, yes, they are lovely, and I will post another sheet of them tonight. I will add them to proper pages when I get a better idea of order of being issued. Have any postal Israel duplicates?

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!

Computer running a bit slow this morning so my dumb brain and the KKL list will have to suffice for now. Gaps can be filled in later.
For all my hard work, I want first dibs at any duplicates !!

First scan covered.
Second scan:

Top Row:

Zvi Schapira x 2, 1953, exists with values
Joesph Trumpledor x 3, 1950. Also exists with values.
Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl, 1949, others in set with and without values.

2nd Row:

Rabbi Meir Bar Ilan, 1949. Others with and without overprinted values.
Max Nordau x 3, 1949, also exists with values
Brigadier Kisch x 2, 1943, others in set with and without overprinted values.

3rd Row:

Menachem Ussishkin x 2, 1941, exists with overprinted values and colour variations
Peretz Smolenskin x 2, 1953, exists with values and colour variations
Rabbi Bar Ilan (see Row 2)

4th Row:

One Million Immigrants, 1950 x 2, also exists with value
Jerusalem Flag x 2, 1957
Zichron Ya'akov 1952, also in blue

5th Row:

Henrietta Szold x 3, 1955, exists other colours with value
Menashe Meirowitz, 1950, exists other colours with and without value
Rabbi Zvi Kalischer, 1954, exists also 100 Prutot value
Ze'ev Jabotinsky, 1960, exists varieties/errors

6th Row:

'Honour thy Teacher' Project x 3, 1953, +5 colour varieties listed
End of Yemenite Exile, 1950, exists in one other colour and in all colours with values
Election of Dr.Chaim Weizmann as Israel's 1st President x 2, 1949, exists other colours and varieties.

I did not list Perforations because on a number of issues there were many and it would have taken too long.
I did not note if issued in Booklets,sheets/other as there were many types and it would have taken too long.
Also, there were some Imperf varieties which I also did not note.

On any of the above, if you, or anyone else, need to know specifics then do ask and I will 'jump to it' !!

Your second page I will do in stages as it is a bit time consuming, although very enjoyable (like a refresher course !).
I will edit that page (when it comes) so all the info will be together in one list.

Enjoy ! Big Grin

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!

Bale is quite good on this topic.
However "Numisamatica catalogue for collectors" lists coins, banknotes stamps and telecards and has a specialised section on these KKL-JNF issues. It is written in both English and Hebrew and published in Israel by Aharoni. It gives catalogue values based on a grading system of A to D where A is 30-80 shekels and D is 350+ shekels. It is quite recent ..I have the 2011 edition , but I think there is a more recent one.

The other main publication is by Jay L Kaplove " Stamp Catalogue of the Jewish National Fund"published in 1973 by the society of Israel Philatelists and the JNF. This does not give any prices , but is a comprehensive detailed listing of these issues.

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!

Hi Dor

I am not aware of any up to date catalogue that gives accurate current prices for this type of material. The majority of stamps in this thread are probably relatively low cost items, and in valuing them I would ask you... what would you think was reasonable to pay for these stamps?
There are a number of catalogues the main ones are Bale, Jay Kaplove, and Aharoni-Numisamatica catalogue for collectors. If anyone knows of any other ones that cover this topic please add them to the thread.
Also see my comments of 4th april!

Bale gives prices for mint, used and on cover for any of these that were used postally in April/May 1948.Most of the postal use was just before Israel declared independance when there were no postage stamps available and the KKL charity fundrasing stamps were used as emergency postage.

Kaplove was published in 1973, and did not give any prices at the time, but is quite comprehensive in terms of listing the stamps, colours , perfs, overprints etc.

Aharoni is quite recent and is published in Israel currently.I have the 2011 edition. However this book rates the stamps as A 30-50 NIS B 80-150NIS C 150-350 NIS and D 350+NIS , so even this author give a price range for a stamp as his book value.

I have always thought that the earlier stamps are worth more on cover than as single loose stamps, and some of the ones you picture can be found on cover, especially the "map"stamps. Bale tends to reflect this.

However a word of warning some of the postmarks and overprints can be found as not genuine.I find it hard to check, I am not an expert and will not attempt to judge your photos/postmarks of the Map stamps. All of this material is still collectable and will have this reflected in value or lack of it!Some covers are "philatelic" not commercial. Bale explains this in detail.

Hope this helps ... like you I like collecting this material and am slowly building my collection.

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!

Triangle, thank you. I Just want to get them into some kind of order on pages with a bit of description somewhere. I guess value would be good too, so I can get a good idea of the value of my overall collection.

re: Israel Early Issues/Cinderellas/local issues etc - Need Help!
