I have been sitting on my father's stamp collection, after he died for some 28 years know. My father loves his stamps. I can remember some of the thing he shows me; however that was a long time ago. My question to everyone is, How can you tell differ in the years when they look the same. The stamp on the bottom, not sure if it’s a 1902 or a1903 and the one on the top is a 1908.
So much to learn!!!

Welcome JKCoffer,
This is a journey-no rush-no pressure-just find the joy that your father before you found, and in doing so you will honor the man & the treasure he left.

If you're lucky, you will discover that the hobby will last you forever.

Happy discovery,
Dan C.

Hi Dan,
I agree with your thoughts completely. I'm not a US collector, so do you have any initial thoughts on what would help JK on the issue that he posted about?

Regards ... Tim.

re: How can you tell differ in the years when they look the same.

Dear Tim and JK,
Thanks for asking, but I'm afraid that by answering I would be depriving JK part of the thrill of the hunt.

Let me say the following: We are looking at 2 examples of Scott # 319. There are two recognized types, type 1 and type 11

There are several different shades of color that are recognized varieties that go from a-q

There are earliest recorded dates of use from 1903-1908 for the different varieties

What JK has shown us is actually two different types of stamps altogether, one a regular 319 ( of unknown type), and a coil example. Let me mention that the coil types could be a number 321 or 322. Those have a perf count of 12. (If the perf count is exactly 12, the values are extraordinary. If the perf count is 12 1/2 , don't give up the day job yet.)

Happy hunting my friend.
Dan C.

Dan is correct that they are the same stamp but different types. The top stamp appears like the perfs were cut from the bottom of the stamp, so probably not a coil.

re: How can you tell differ in the years when they look the same.

The best way to tell the difference is to buy, or borrow from your local library, a Scott's catalog, or one similar, for the country you are interested in. If it is only US stamps, a Scott's specialized of US stamps will get you well on your way to identifying US stamps.

re: How can you tell differ in the years when they look the same.

Ah Vince, you are likely correct, but for the pot of gold awaiting the finding of a 321 or 322 the search must be made.

JK, did I not mention that a find like that catalogs at $450,000 or $7,000 respectively? Of course my 2009 Scott Specialized catalog is out of date as to current pricing, but surely worth the effort, no? This hobby is a treasure search, be it for $ or knowledge or just plain fun. Along the way you will find other seekers, and together much fun can be had.

Good hunting and feel free to raise all the questions you may have.

Austrian revenue stamp, from the third issue of 1866, used. You won't find this in Scott catalog.
