Would it be possible to add Ryukyu Islands to the country code list (or did I miss it)?

Canal Zone, too?

Doug, you're right. Those do not exist. However, would a US Administration category suffice? That would cover several small areas that were under US administration at one time.

I should think so. I was just struggling with what category to list some under. I see Palau and Micronesia categories already exist, but they are different. US Back of the Book didn't feel right, either, since they were normal postal use stamps.

ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes are two-letter country codes defined ... by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

True, but I don't think we should use those because we need to consider "dead" countries and territories as well. Nice thought, though.

Easily done by using an extended set of 3- or 4-letter codes for the, uh, discontinued entities.

Example of consolidation: DE (Germany) + BY (for Bayern) = DEBY

Example of de-colonialization: VU (Vanuatu) + NH (New Hebrides) = VUNH

Yes, there are a few especially complex histories, but that's no reason to run from a common standard.

For the Soviet Union, I would like to suggest SUXX, but that's me.

Cheers,
