1949 stamp celebrating the 75th anniversary of the U.P.U. The monument depicted was created in 1909 by the French sculptor Rene de Paul de Saint-marceaux and is located at U.P.U. headquarters in Bern. The "theme" of the sculpture was to be (and is) "Around the World," and depicts five figures representing five messengers -- five continents.

Was sorting out my old world wide collection and was struck by the beauty of this imperforate stamp. I found out a lot about the sculptor, but have been unable to find out who engraved the stamp. I'll keep digging.

Google U.P.U. monument and there are a lot of nice photos of the monument. Learned a lot about the U.P.U today. Good info.

If anyone knows of other stamps depicting this monument please let me know. I am aware of a joint 2009 issue of Switzerland and France. That's my next look up.

Cheers,
Eric

UPDATE: Just googled "stamps depicting the U.P.U. monument. It seems they are ubiquitous. Not sure how I failed to take note of this phenomenon. Every country seems to have a version or two. Time for a martini.

This theme is used on many stamps commemorating the UPU.

I always liked the 1949 British Omnibus set for the UPU. The high value from that set uses a design similar to the Philippines stamp displayed at the beginning of this thread.

The American Topical Association UPU checklist includes ("is populated by") 1396 stamps ...

... perhaps the UPU monument subset deserves its own list?

I never paid much attention to what the monument is. I always thought it was a sculpture that was located in the UPU headquarters. Never saw an actual picture of it. Now, I'm really impressed! Thanks for posting it.
