I found an old envelope with a one cent Canadian stamp and a three cent Canadian stamp cut in half and attached to the envelope. The envelope was passed through the postal system in 1939 to a home in Granville Ferry NS. I`m assuming for a collector . Can anyone add to the mystery of bisect stamps for me?

As far as I know, we did not have them in Australia.

In the early U.S., bisects were used as well. If you come across a bunch let's talk.

I have a few covers here and there - I think I have one from the Channel Is. Fun stuff to find! Could you post a pic?

re: bisect stamps

Bisects have been used in a great many countries to cover franking when there were a shortage of suitable stamps. When found on cover they are usually quite valuable and hence are commonly found on contrived covers in an attempt to cheat collectors.

re: bisect stamps

There have been numerous bisects for sale on eBay from Panama, all of them were favor cancelled and not postally used.

Since I read the beginning of this thread, I came across this one for sale, you know where...

I remember the topic of bisects back when I was collecting in the 1970s. I experimented by sending a few to myself, and got them in the mail without issue. I'll have to dig them up. They are probably somewhere in the hoard.

re: bisect stamps

I found this in a large lot of pre-cancels I bought. Not really a bisect, but interesting. The 2 halves are not from the same stamp as far as I can tell. No clue as to why someone did this.

These are neat...I wonder if a bisect would make it through the mail today? I might just try it!!
