I just found this in a bunch of kiloware

Image Not Found

Ist Class, with Security Slits but no Security overlay, looks to have 2 Phosphor Bands but no UV reaction and the perfs are about 9.
What a terrible forgery, but it appears to have gone through the postal system!!

These were also found in the same batch

Image Not Found

They are both from 2010, both coded MRIL, one has security slits the other does not.
I believe the one with slits came from a coil, the one without could have come from a coil or a Prestige Booklet?

Congrats on a cool find! Great catch and good eye! Wear the name 'philatelist' proudly.Applause

Stamporama seems to be charmed - so many of our members find neat stuff like Saleem's imperf 10c USA stamps, Michael found the right side up Jennies, and little old me found that Irish recall. Next time Tim asks for pics for the upper left, submit a pic and add it to our 'teams' gallery!

Image Not FoundMust be a good month for finding items. Have just come across this 24p while sorting. The possible forgery is on the left with normal on the right. The surface seems to be much more shiny than normal.UV light seems to give little or no glow.
Can any of our Machin experts confirm or deny this for me? It is a shame that the person who tore it from the envelope managed to tear the stamp somewhat.
Thought please.

re: Machin Find

The 24p red brown appears on ACPB ( advanced coated paper bright) and ACPD (advanced coated paper dull). However there are intermediate states. These can only be id'd with uv. There are also Questa litho printings from prestige booklets (with and without 2 phosphor bands). It has to be said that the chances of finding these other than used for philatelic purposes is most unlikely. Also check there are booklet stamps with straight edge left and right, and stamps with screening dots across the value. Check the on-line Connoisseur catalogue for details

Thanks Malcolm but it was the lousy perfs that seem out of place. The stamp is quite unlike any of the other few hundred that I have sorted.

re: Machin Find

There are several (postal) forgeries of this stamp - one is approx perf 11. The forgers offered these to corner shop type agencies at lower prices than the genuine Royal Mail issues and many found their way onto mail.

Used stamps having already defrauded the revenue are acceptable to collect. Mint stamps I would suggest it is illegal to possess.

Details of the forgeries appear in the Connoisseur paper catalogue - I don't know about on-line.

re: Machin Find

Further to my earlier post on the 24p possible forgery there is currently a mint block of 4 on offer from Ozzie seller on ebay, these look very similar to the image I posted above. link to item http://www.ebay.ca/itm/GREAT-BRITAIN-Early-1990s-24p-Machin-FORGERY-Mint-Unhinged-Block-of-4-/162144567378?hash=item25c091c052:g:UOYAAOSwdzVXkfFZ
On another ebay listing by a Russian Federation seller are number of Machins with a double zero value, there is no note of them being forgeries but they do not look correct. Here is a link to them http://www.ebay.ca/itm/GREAT-BRITAIN-1997-Machin-00p-5p-MNH-/262542767390?hash=item3d20c4b51e:g:wqUAAOSwk1JWcsx

Sorting again today and found this 19p which stood out for not being the glossy flame orange colour, more pale like the 25p salmon pink. The Queens image seems to have a whiter quality compared to the normal. The questionable stamp is on the left.
Any thoughts anyone?Image Not Found

re: Machin Find

Yes, the perfs are not just the clue, but virtually seal the deal.
I have several of these 24p rust counterfeits,
usually on paper with a 1p dark maroon,
some a 1p Enschelde Gravure and one a Quests Litho,
since the 24p regular letter rate changed
shortly after the bogus issue was produced,
( About 1992-'93) to 25p ( 1993-'96.)
I also have an entire contemporary used
with the two stamps tied to what appears to be
a genuine regular letter usage.
Counterfeiting regular stamps seems to be a cottage industry
and I suppose, if you are careful,
reasonably profitable.
It does give Machinstas something to be aware of and seek to add "colour"
to the pages of QE II heads in an album.

Thank you Mack, for that information it just stood out from the masses that I had been sorting through.
I must admit I had not looked at the difference in value type/measurements, seems so obvious after you point it out.
Very grateful for your input and yet another variation to make space for on the page. When I get that far!
