I would include that which the club believes makes it special and distinct from other clubs.
The first thought that came to my mind was a forever stamp. I know they have been printing them for a number of years now but I should would be curious to know if 100 years from now if they are still printing forever stamps or if they are even printing stamps.
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we had the Forever stamp joke at our meeting last night.
We are going to get a Photostamp made for our August newsletter mail-out. And it was suggested that we put some in the capsule.
That gives me the idea (a deep thought!) of putting the whole stamped envelope with the newsletter inside. And in the newsletter we should have published a letter written to those who will open it.
Another thought members had was a one-page history of the club's first 100 years. I am to prepare that and I was thinking of printing it on (whats the best paper?) using (inkjet or laser printer?) or written longhand on some nice old linen paper like they used in envelopes in the 1920s? or both!
For Forever stamps lasting - good idea, maybe the Planets issue, or Pluto?
Or the yummy soda fountain stamps?
And some 1916 stamps too!
The thing that makes our club special and distinct from other clubs is that we own our own clubhouse. Good point - so we could put the deed or the floor plans in!
Anything else, more general to the early 21st century?
What about a group photo of all the current club members (Unless that is what you plan to include on the photo stamp)? I always love looking at photos from another time.
Maybe a stamp dealer page with current pricing of some stamps to show how much things cost present day.
How about:
- biographies of current members, including what they collect and why.
- copies of your newletter
- show covers that you have produced
- if you have ever done a one page exhibit, some examples
- some information about the club 100 years ago
- a set of current stamps (as available in the post office right now)
Also think about what would appeal to you if you were opening a time capsule now.
Jan
How about some stamp catalogs, like a Scott US Specialized.
I would include your earliest club newsletter, possibly one from your first year - or your very first one, ideally - along with your most current copy.
A current member list is a good idea as well, as Jan mentioned.
If anyone is alive in 100 years to open it, send them plans from the Acme Corporation (the one used by Wile E. Coyote), for a time machine and have them go back to England at the beginning of the industrial revolution, and warn everyone of what the future holds for mankind....
TuskenRaider
.....leave it to Ken to get all serious here....
How about including opinions on what the mail service and stamp collecting may be like in 100 years. That probably would cause some laughs.
How about a recent copy of Linn's Stamp Magazine and also one of their older editions, for comparison. Maybe a copy of the American Philatelist.

Capestampman's Machin Tee- Shirt
Putting the new Planets set in the capsule is a great idea! However, I'd go a bit farther and put in some examples of the stamps newly produced this year (the Stamp Act Repeal, the International Stamp Show Issue in intaglio, etc.) as well.
Bobgggg's new T-shirt, with him in it, just don't fold, staple or mutilate the shirt.
Mike
Sheryll..
I have a spare copy of the World Stamp Show NY 2016 Program Guide
If you would like it for you time capsule, send me your mailing address, and I will gladly drop it in the mail to you.
So many good ideas, thanks for sharing them.
Thanks very much for your offer, bobgggg. As it happens, Niko brought one back along with other souvenirs and donated them as raffle prizes. And I won the program!
So I will offer that.
US Specialized may prove too big, but I'll suggest it.
T-shirt - we have all bought an OSS centennial t-shirt.
I'll suggest putting in one of the extras.
There is to be a group photo that day (of us all in our t-shirts),
I'll suggest the photo be before the burial ceremony, and someone can print the photo.
Stamp dealer brochure would be fun.
simothecat - many of your ideas will be on exhibit that day (not first but earliest newsletter, show covers, info about the club 100 years ago, a frame of one-page exhibits), biographies of members from the '70s and '80s.
I have had an historic newsletter printed on decent paper. It has the history till 1994 in it.
I think if I were opening a time capsule now, I'd most like a personal letter with enclosures like you have all suggested. If there was an item that tickled my sense of humor, that would be icing on the cake!
If you " ... written longhand on some nice old linen paper ..." you better include a copy in block letters along with a cartoon version, a veritable Rosetta stone for the illiterates we are producing.
And while a good time capsule should be filled with inert gas or a vauum should remove the atmosphere, it might be wise to eliminate the glutinous mixture lest everything be one incomprehensible block of pulp.
Well, we went through the list at the meeting and most of your suggestions made it.
We had to say no to the Scott US Specialized for space reasons.
The NY2016 catalog missed out too, but we are going to put in the APS StampShow 2016 catalog instead.
1916 stamps - yes, and I am to put in a cover from 1916 (I found one US and one foreign)
earliest Album Page (newsletter)
latest Album Page in envelope with cancelled Photostamp
the OSS history printed on ink-jet and laser printers, and possibly writing it out by hand (will be schoolgirl copperplate when my hands are steady)
group photo of all the current club members (will be t-shirt photo this weekend)
PhotoStamp of all the current club members -something related to the clubhouse or Oregon
Show covers we have produced (will also include APS StampShow 2016 covers)
A one-page exhibit
club brochure
club t-shirt
current member list
Stamp dealer page with current pricing of some stamps (Jaffe's catalog)
that which the club believes makes it special and distinct from other clubs (copy of clubhouse deed)
Biographies of current members not available
Recent copy of Linns
Recent copy of American Philatelist
------------------------
Hopefully we will make a list of everything that actually goes in.
Thanks for your suggestions! They were really useful!!
A quick update:
Our PhotoStamp did turn out to be a photo of all the club members with their 100th anniversary t-shirts on. Thank you for that suggestion.
My stamp club (Oregon Stamp Society) is celebrating its centennial (centenary) this year, and we have many events planned during July and August.
One of them is burying a time capsule that is to be opened 100 years from now.
Members have been wishy-washy so far about what we should include in the capsule. I'd appreciate your ideas. Anyone?
