This site was a real find for me. It is getting harder to find stamp-related websites out there which haven't decayed or gone cold from lack of use. Stamporama is a breath of fresh air. I am a relatively new stamp collector; been at it about 3 years or so. But I have come across quite a few old stamp albums and I have accumulated a LOT of stamps. My interests lie primarily with Unused and postally interesting Used U.S. stamps, but my interests have broadened out considerably lately due to the influence of 2 amazing books: The World Encyclopedia of Stamps & Stamp Collecting by Dr. James Mackay and Funk & Wagnall's Guide to the World of Stamp Collecting. The amazing stories found within about various stamps and their history and provenance are like reading a great mystery or a cracking good detective story. I now am interested in Stamps of the World, which is good because I have a lot of them. What I don't like is either cutting or trying to obtain the right size mount for each stamp I have. I had bought the Statesman for World Stamps and the Mystic Heirloom for U.S., but I am now thinking of saving up for some hingeless albums (with mounts at the ready) such as Minkus or Davos. At any rate, to finish up, my particular interests lie in BOB stamps U.S., esp. Tax and Revenue stamps, many of which are simply beautiful; AND believe it or not, some of the most beautiful stamps in the world - Russian Rural Zemstvo stamps, frequently produced by local artists in the region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most are highly undervalued, because up until now Scott has not included them in their catalogs, though I hear that is about to change. At any rate, thanks for welcoming me, and I hope to be a regular member of this site for many years and learn from you all. Cheers!

Welcome Jake and it sounds like you've been bitten by the stamp bug pretty good. My wife is a Jenks also, but it seems to still be working, our 56th anniversary is only a week away.

Hi Jake;

Thanks for mentioning those books. I've never heard of either one, and will want to do some research on them both.

I don't have the problem of cutting mounts, because I only use hinges, and know I'll die with my collection unsold, so don't care what happens to them.

Stamps are only looked at from the front by almost all collectors, when showing off our treasures to other collectors, so spending 10¢ to mount a stamp worth 1¢ means I can only buy one tenth as many stamps because of all the money wasted on mounts.

Spent half of my lifetime earnings on women and booze....the rest I wasted.

I'll still have to buy food tho....

re: Thanks for Welcoming Me!

Welcome aboard!

You mention DAVO. I use DAVO hingeless albums for my core collecting interest, U.S., Australia, and Great Britain, but I only collect up to 1965. If you collect up to "present day" that could run into a lot of money for albums. Also, those mounts can, rarely, come off the page if they get scraped by a finger, etc., so keep some clear mounts around as spares (Cristal or whatever). Only happened a few times, so not a big deal. These albums are holding up VERY well & I have no complaint.

Rest of my collection goes onto Lindner uniplate pages that I keep in regular 3-ring binders. But people here can help lead you to other alternatives.

Best of luck!
Eric
