General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Should I belong to an online stamp club?

Well it has been a long time. Almost a full year. I haven't felt as liberated since the baseball strike in '94. Never knew how much else was out there, and how little this mattered. Not having to check the site or keep track of the discussions has been a blessing....

My collection has grown nicely. Significant additions & improvements. And without any talk or discussion about it!

I like all of you. Most of you, anyway. I miss the kinship & friendship. That's been missing - for many years.

I really don't care what you call it: a club; a community; a trading club; or just a combination of all of the above. If it isn't fun & enjoyable, it doesn't make a bit of difference what is claims to be.

Hope everyone is well. Lots has happened in the world since we last spoke. Hope all of your collections are doing well!!

Well that was very helpful Ernie...awesome - thanks!

Just wanted to be sure. Clearly not a necessity. Glad I asked...

Thanks for clearing that up. And to think I may have been concerned about it for the next 5 minutes!

Just wanted to check in & say hello - & hope everyone was well. I'll obviously not need to check in again & worry about this for at least a few more years...what a relief!!

Dear All,
Why the harsh tones and slights? Brothers and sisters are always welcomed, even though there may be some discord between them. Thus it ought to be here- discords can be ironed out. We have gone through quite an upheaval in the past year or so, and we are mostly all still here and part of the family. Those not here are missed, those returned are welcome and appreciated.

If there is an issue, air it either privately or publicly, but certainly deal with it. It drains one's energy otherwise. Reach out to one another-can brothers or sisters do less?

Sorry folks, but with comments made by this member in another thread, I'm having a terrible time keeping a civil tone. It's just not in my nature. I should probably go find something else to do before I say what I really think of people like this!!

re: Should I belong to an online stamp club?

Dan,

I appreciate your optimism....

...however, there are at times those "bad apples" that seem to be begging to have themselves
removed from the bunch.

It would seem, with mdroth's initial post and thread title, that he has set himself up intentionally to be knocked down here, possibly in an attempt to give himself a REASON to not be a part of SOR;

that way he can fault everyone else for what ultimately is his own callousness toward others that has led to his malicious comments here and elsewhere on this board.

I am sorry to say, Dan, that your optimism here is sadly misspent.

And after all - it was he who began this discussion......with a chip on his shoulder.

SOR has a Code of Conduct. Here is the second point of that Code:

2. Be considerate of others in the Discussion Boards. Do not behave in ways that can be considered to be abusive, disruptive, illegal, or otherwise detrimental to Stamporama.

The sixth point of the conduct says a violation of the code can lead to cancellation of membership. It seems to me to be a perfect time to set his in motion.

re: Should I belong to an online stamp club?

To be fair, judging a community on the basis of the actions of one disgruntled member is a narrow vision. Some boards don't allow ANY dissent to appear thus creating the false impression that everything is rosy. In this case, a member chose to post an extremely inflammatory comment then started this thread to fan the flames. Instead of deleting this, Stamporama folks are being allowed to comment. Which is preferable? Banning anything negative or allowing a bit more freedom to express feelings? That's a tough call.

In my humble opinion, dissenting voices should be given a chance to speak but with limits. Vulgarity, attacks upon religious beliefs, hate statements and other such black comments should not be permitted.

In response to the posters initial question I must ask - why come here and post these unfriendly messages? What could you possibly hope to achieve?

Surely the sensible thing to do would be to lock the thread.
I requested this on other threads earlier this year and Purrfin kindly obliged.
I do not know who the Mods are but surely this is the best thing to do.

Easy too.

Stamporama is getting a reputation for controversy. But it's so easy to nip these things in the bud.

It really is.

I have to totally agree with LB1. We're all going to have differences of opinion and different ways of expressing our opinions, which is usually why I try to avoid the non-stamp related threads here. But since I view by "Last 30 By Time", I can't always avoid them -- (no I won't go there again with that issue Big Grin ...)

A lot of times locking a thread is the easiest why to let things cool off before further damage gets done.
