Of the 100 or so I've found so far I have set aside about 6 MNH/MH and the rest are blazingly obvious CTOs. Scott prices for CTO and implies that all (most?) were such initially, but later releases may have gone uncancelled to buyers who then used them postally. {Hope I paraphrased this properly}.

I came across just 3 that to me looked postally used, one with what appears to be some kind of advertising cancel. I can post a scan when I get home tonight if anyone wants to see them.

I don't see a premium noted for these in Scotts.
1) Would there be one, and if so approximately how much in percentage over normal CV?
2) Is there collector demand for such over CTOs?
3) Would my collection be enhanced by keeping a (possible) postally used one rather than a CTO?

Many thanks.

Dave.

re: Germany DDR Official Stamps "O1 Type" - Postal Usage

I always prefer stamps that have performed their actual function and have an authentic cancel over CTO stamps. I will mount a CTO in my used collection until I come across an actual used stamp, at which time the used stamp will replace the CTO version.

Finding actual used stamps can be a real challenge for many issues from many different countries. Depending upon your temperament, this can make it either very interesting or very frustrating to find actual used stamps.

Dave, you should take into consideration what Richard said.

People collect CTOs particularly from the Eastern European nations, because that is how they were delivered to this country as actual mail from the east was not high volume.

Don't worry abut "enhancing" (you mean value?) your collection by ignoring CTOs and trying to collect postally used. If you want to fill in the spaces on the album pages, then take what you get. Then, do as Richard suggests and upgrade later when you can. Otherwise, you'll have many blank spaces, which does nothing to enhance the appearance of a collection.

re: Germany DDR Official Stamps "O1 Type" - Postal Usage

Sorry for the misunderstanding, we're on the same wavelength Michael.

I'm no "CTO-snob" - if that's what I've got I put it in my ever-developing album (I have a mix of CTO, used, and mint).

My point was if I find a postally-used copy would it be "better" to replace an existing CTO copy in my album - with the enhancement being more "an increase in the appeal to a fellow (knowledgeable) collector". That being said, I would assume there would be a concurrent enhancement in value.

Still trying to find out what (if any) premium is applied to a postally used. If it's less than 10% I'd probably just keep the CTO, if it's 25% I'd replace the CTO with the P-U copy, and if it's 100% I'd keep the CTO and sell the P-U ASAP!

Thanks.

re: Germany DDR Official Stamps "O1 Type" - Postal Usage

Michel values used stamps from the DDR in postally used and CTO conditions, and also on cover. Postally used, of course are worth more. However, there is no simple formula to arrive at the postally used value.

Scott values most of the O1 type officials at minimum value. You didn't mention which ones you have, but per Michel most of the common stamps run postally used around two (mostly) or three times catalog value. You're still not looking at alot of value, but if you have many, I'm sure there are probably some collectors who would want them.
