Its a great asset I agree, but a very poor location. I will never see it unless it moves to DC, New York, Boston or even Pittsburgh.
...or as a non-APS member.
I have used it in all its prior glory as an APS member and I will never see it in person in its new digs.
Lewis,
Why??
Have you been banned from there?
I suppose I should never say never. But I can't envision finding the time or inclination to drive to the middle of PA just to visit the library. I'd have to be alone for one thing and passing through or on other business for some unknown reason (because my family won't want to tag along).
I suppose it is practical to have the library in a location where expenses are fairly low, particularly if the objective is increase the material available online. I await the day when its all online and we have an announcement like "The World's Largest Philatelic Library is Completely Online".
Hungryforstamps,
On your member profile is lists Pennsylvania as your mailing address. I am curios if you still live in Pennsylvania or have moved? I live in Philadelphia and it is about a three hour drive for me. I haven't visited Bellefonte just for the library and not sure if I would, I visit the area for other reasons, mostly R+R.
SCOPEX has had their annual show at the Philatelic center the last few years. There are other goings on there during the year like classes but that might night be for you, I get that.
If you have children they may go to Penn State and that would give you an excuse for visiting Bellefonte.
I would like to see the entire library available on line but that may be awhile before it happens. 3 miles of shelves and 80,000 volumes, that's a lot of scanning.

Here is the link for the American Philatelic Research Library grand opening.

I visited the old APS headquarters when it was located in State College and this is huge improvement over that site. I know there was a lot of bad feelings over the move (less than 10 miles) but this is an asset to our hobby. Anyone who may be in the area of State College really should make time to visit the APS Headquarters. If you need a recommendation on where to stay just send me a PM.
I will not be there for the Grand Opening but will visit later in early December when I make one of my trips to Bellefonte. I have been visiting Bellefonte for about twenty years just as a quick get away vacation. It is about three hours from Philadelphia. Center County is beautiful in the fall but don't expect to find any lodging when there is a Penn State home game, just is not happening.
