Can anyone help me with some tips for identifying the various types of the 5-cent Circus Wagon stamp from the Transportation coils?

Many thanks!

re: Help Identifying 5-cent Circus Wagon

The Luminescent ink varieties use longwave UV to see instead of the shortwave that normal US tagging requires. Also, my research shows that for the 2452Dg, the shiny gum has large holes and the low gloss gum has small holes. The difference is more subtle than on the liberty series stamps.

Angore's list is fantastic. I can only add the plate numbers:

2452 plate 1
2452a dull gum plate 1
2452a low gloss gum plate 2
2452B plate A1, A2
2452Bf luminescent ink plate A3
2452D 1995 year plate S1, S2
2452Dg 1995 lge holes plate S2, S3
2452Dg 1995 small holes plate S2

I hope the above makes the mess a bit less messy!

Hi Peter.
Where did those plate numbers come from? My 2010 Specialized shows something different.

I would suspect a Durland catalogue but just a guess.

Sorry, I must have fallen asleep. The plate number info in my post above come from the PNC3 values list 2014. A new version of this list ( with actual retail values! ) is coming out any time now. Please check with the PNC3 website: www.PNC3.org .

re: Help Identifying 5-cent Circus Wagon

May I add a bit more helpful hints?
I had a question about how to differentiate the 2452a (untagged) 5c Circus Wagon (engraved) from the 2452B (untagged) 5c Circus Wagon (Photogravure). I know that on engraved stamps the layer of ink is thicker than on photogravure, but that is not always easy for me to distinguish. Both of these stamps (2452a and 2452B) have the 5c on the left whereas the 2452D has the 5c on the right (and 2452D is "5c" not "05"). I was looking for an easy visual way to tell the difference. What I found was that the shape of the "5" is different. The shape of the "5" on the 2452B is the same as that on the 2452D. (The top line of the "5" is straighter). The top line of the "5" on the 2452 (and 2452a) curls up a bit at the right side.

As far as the luminescent ink: I found that using Short Wave UV, I cold tell if the ink was luminescent or not. All my samples looked pretty much the same under SWUV (not tagged and orange glow to the ink. What suprised me was that under Long Wave UV I saw 3 distinct kinds of response to the LWUV. On some the ink glowed orange, on some reddish orange, and on some more red. I also saw differences to what appeared to be tagging, but wonder if that could be paper brighteners or ?
Anyway, just a little more info to put out there...

Edited on 25 April 2018. I was reviewing this post and realized I had some of the cat #s mixed up.
Also want to add that I just found out that there are different sizes of back numbers on the 2452Dg. I have 2 different sizes of back numbers. Scott Specialized 2010 doesn't mention that.
