The design of the 1971 Christmas stamp was the subject of a competition conducted among final year art students at 14 technical schools throughout Australia. The winning design features the heads of the Three Wise Men in graphic style. To provide a variety of stamps for Christmas mail, the same design was printed in seven different colour combinations within the sheet, the different colours arranged to produce a "cross" effect within each quarter-sheet.

Designer: John Lee, Randwick Technical College, Sydney NSW.
Printer: Reel-fed photogravure printed on the Chambon press at the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne.
Printing order: Mauve, Green, Rust & Blue.
Sheet Layout: The seven colour combinations were arranged in a se-tenant format such that in each half-sheet of 25 stamps there appeared a "cross" of seven stamps formed from those designs having a green background colour. This arrangement results in unequal numbers of each stamp appearing in the sheet.

The order of the stamp where the colours are repeated: Top Row - 1,2,3,2,1: Second Row - 4,5,6,5,4: Third Row: 7,6,3,6,7: Fourth Row: 4,5,6,5,4: Fifth Row: 1,2,3,2,1.

For example: Top Row - 3: Third Row - 3: Fifth Row - 3 are the same stamps.

The Cross: Top to Bottom - 3,6,3,6,3: Cross Section: 7,6,3,6,7.

Condition: Mint Unhinged.
