As I understood the story, the writer was a tourist. Perhaps the geographical names were taken from a road map or the Lonely Planet guide?

Some while ago I posted a cover addressed to me stating only my profession and the London suburb I lived in, which arrived safely in due course. The Icelandic cover seems quite plausible (if only that cancel had hit the envelope more clearly). I see no problem in writing Icelandic names with the 'thorn' letter - most educated people could do that.
But what would the point be, if it is not genuine? Why go to all the trouble of creating the cover and affixing a used stamp to it? For internet fame? To sell to philatelists?

The act of "pulling someone's leg" is often reason enough to the item's creator..
I have done such things myself just for laughs.

Given the syntax of the English writing I conclude that the author is either a native English speaker or an extremely competent linguist, as it is written as I would write it exactly ( although there are those who suggest that I don't speak English very well !)
