I had the privilege of looking through several dozen covers that were provisionals dating from the pre-Civil War era for Baton Rouge. We had a major collector bring his collection to our stamp club meeting last night to show us. One of the rarest ones was worth about 100k and many were in the 3-5k range. They were beautiful to look at and each had an interesting story to tell.
He also had some from the Civil War and some that were transported by steamboat. Here is a photo of a cover that I copied from an auction site to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
