"44 US stamps for $2.00"
There is a surge in stamp demand. Especially for the better quality items.
"Yesterday in the weekly Redplum mailing (where many of the local pizza places mail out their coupons) I see a full page ad from Kenmore: 44 US stamps for $2.00. Aimed at the non-collector or the grandparents of a child collector. Actually, I'm pleased to see it because when I was a kid I probably jumped at a chance like that via HE Harris or Jamestown companies"
"PSE registry. Not really for kids but established only for "bragging rights"."
" ... kids today are more sophisticated and the world is a few clicks away. ..."
The general run of kids today are not sure whether Africa ia a country or a state prison.
Knowledge of geography and history is pathetic.
As for science or math, worse than pathetic.

So is this the reason the cashiers at wallyworld are on break when the power goes off?

Actually, I'm pleased to see it because when I was a kid I probably jumped at a chance like that via HE Harris or Jamestown companies. It's not quite what might grab the attention of the young non-collectors. They need a app on their smartphones that will draw them into collecting real stamps. Like Pokeman Go for stamp collectors. Suggest that to an app coder (programmer). The ASDA should (I'd say "would" but I'm a dreamer) probably pay to have that software created, huh?
There needs to be a competitive aspect to stamp collecting to attract some people.
Just like sports. I'm not talking about winning a blue ribbon at a stamp show. That's for existing collectors on a pretty high level of the stamp collecting pyramid. Maybe a real treasure hunt with a virtual reward on a computer game. Accumulate stamps off the mail, send a jpg to a Facebook group, the most interesting stamp collection gets some virtual album in the cloud.
I play World of Warcraft on computer and see how people spend thousands of hours questing for virtual rewards. So the energy to collect things is there---it's just not pointed at stamp collecting. Find a gimmick to reinvigorate the accumulating of collectables and the hobby will grow. A big box of used stamps for kids at stamp shows just isn't gonna cut it.
