General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : UPDATED - 102 Card Agony! Looking For Ideas...

I recently got a bunch of 102 cards that each held one (sometimes a couple) nice MNH stamps. Unfortunately, half of them are stuck to the cards.

In a few cases I was able to use my stamp tongs to gently massage them out with minimal effect on the gum. In other cases I simply ended up ripping the stamps.

I'm resigned to having them in a condition where "MNH" would no longer be an appropriate designation, but since I will keep most of them mounted as "MH" I don't really care. I just don't want to destroy any more of them.

I'm thinking I may have to remove the plastic from the card and apply steam to loosen them. Or possibly squirt in a little lighter fluid in hope it will dry quickly afterwards with minimal gum disturbance.

Any advice?

Many thanks, Dave.

Are they:

PSA (Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive)

WAG (Water-Activated Gum)

You can try putting them in the freezer for a few days if they are water activated gum

Dave:

For some, if you run the cards over an edge (like a table), it'll loosen them up. If that doesn't work, I'd go with the freezer option suggested above - I found that it worked OK for some stamps that have stuck together.

Hey ikey, ya little wag!

Is that a more polite term for what I would know as TAG (Tongue Activated Glue). Of course, not referring to a phosphorescent issue, just to clarify...)

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try them out when I get home this afternoon and report back.

Dave.

re: UPDATED - 102 Card Agony! Looking For Ideas...

Tried 52 102's with the freezer technique.

1) Two hours, got 8 stamps off fairly easily.

2) Overnight, another 10.

3) Still have 20 that won't even budge.

4) 14 that some detached but trying to loosen them with tongs just wrinkled/creased the paper too much.

NEXT STEPS?

Thanks, Dave.

Just trivia - Model car guys use the freezer technique to take valuable old models apart for restoration. We wet them, and put them in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight. The water gets in the joints between parts and expands, either popping the parts free or at least loosening them to make it easier to get apart.

re: UPDATED - 102 Card Agony! Looking For Ideas...

Thanks Tommy. I've dampened 2 semi-damaged stamps - 1 with lighter fluid 1 with soapy water. In the ice maker for extra-cold for 2 hours then will report back.

P.S. Instead of tongs (no sharp edge and fairly thick) I used a razor-thin knife. Looked awesome for 1/2 cm then sliced straight through the stamp.

Maybe I'll put them into Auction as "Rare Bisected Pair".

Hey Dave,
Regarding the freezer method; try leaving them in for a week. Seriously! My Mom used to leave any uncancelled stamps in the freezer, on the envelope paper for weeks upon weeks, until they fell off.
The only one that didn't was one of the newer self-adhesive stamps. I think it's still in there....and there is still hope for re-using it.

re: UPDATED - 102 Card Agony! Looking For Ideas...

After all that I think I'm just going to go with Webpaper's idea from my Heavy Hinge Thread...

I'm just going to soak the entire stamps off the cards. Where they are (Stuck) "MNH" they will now be "MNG". I'll just keep them in my own album (where they will look nice and clean) and I can use hinges rather than expensive mounts. Plus I will save lots of time and the agony of wrecking any more stamps (5 have given their bodies to scientific research).

For Used it's no issue anyway.

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas.

Dave.

P.S. I'm going to try Dennis's idea on a few, although I'm afraid my general lack of patience will not allow me to leave them alone for weeks...will report back later.

Here's a guess, Benque: Mom had a frost-free refrigerator.

Once every 24 hours, they blast the inside of the freezer with warmish air, ripping the ice crystals ('frost') off every surface.

Mom was exposing her WAG (Water-Activated Gum) stamps to a cycle of warmish moist air & cold drier air that would have gently & steadily worked each stamp off of its cover, neatly preserving most of the gum in the bargain.

ikeyPikey,
That sounds very reasonable. I should point out that these being previously licked, some glue was almost always necessary to stick them to the 2nd letter they'd be affixed to.
Pretty much MNG after the freezer treatment, but perhaps hinges on un-licked gum would be less of a challenge.
This is a tough problem to find the perfect solution for!
I'll keep thinking about it, and keep watching to see if anyone else has that magical solution.
