I picked this old book up about 10 years ago at an estate sale. I bought it primarily because I'm a sucker for pen and ink illustrations.

Image Not Found

It's titled, "Our Presidents At A Glance", has a copyright of 1933 and covers all the presidents from Washington to FDR. It has a presentation sheet inside the front cover from a teacher to her student that's date 1936.

The pages are in great shape, but the binding and cover were toast. My first idea was to make a slip cover for it, but I didn't care for how it turned out, so I set it aside for a couple of days to think about it.

Image Not Found

Eventually, I decided to remove, trim and punch the pages to put into a 3-ring binder. I used a page from an old Harris album to slip into the front cover.

Image Not Found

After that, I made templates to create a border for the main illustration page and another for framing the stamps. I can cut out appropriately sized holes for whatever stamps I decide to mount.

Image Not Found

...and this is where I started. Even though you could fill an entire page with Washington stamps, I'll try to keep it fairly clean and organized with just a few stamps that don't overpower the illustration. That won't be an issue with most Presidents.

The text pages cover everything from birth to death(where app.)and contains a lot of info you don't always see in a biography. In the back there are also pages that cover the history of all the first ladies, a history of the electoral process and the vote statistics for all the elections. As well as a summary page of the Presidents political careers. I think it was a very well thought out and nicely executed publication.

Hope you like it, comments and suggestions always welcome.

"... I'm a sucker for pen and ink illustrations ..."

Something else we share!

My picture postcard hoard has a separate pile for pen'n'ink illustrations, most of which are from the hospitality industry.

Some years ago, I began buying old engineering textbooks ... for their draftsman-style illustrations. Not long after I began my Elder Care Gig back here in the States, my kids volunteered to clean-out my apartment back home and, now that you mention it, I forgot to add those books to the store-it-don't-toss-it list. Ouch!

I like what you've done with this project. Usually, the paper in this sort of book runs a little thin, so I would have been reluctant to place it in a 3-ring binder.

Instead, I would have gone for a spiral binding, as this would spread the load to the entire side of the page ... and I would not expect to ever add pages.

Or - having had some luck with this in the past - I would have sent the whole piece to a bookbinder who, with just a little judicious trimming, would have kept the original covers more/less intact.

I would not have spent the rest of my life worrying about outgassing from the bookbinder's glue, as I expect that they would, in the ordinary course of business, use relatively archival-friendly glue.

Well-done, wb!

Cheers,

re: Using An Old Book To Create An Album

Hey Ikey, I also have a modest collection. I found that turn of the century home/school reference libraries are an excellent source. I have 4 or 5 sets that range from 1895 to 1913. The better the set, the better the illustrations.

The paper in this book is surprisingly heavy, almost like construction paper, so I don't think tear out will be an issue. If it should prove to be, I guess I could house them in sheet protectors.

I did consider having the book repaired/rebound, but the resale value is only about $15-$20 and I didn't know for sure, but figured repair would likely cost at least that, if not more.

In the end, the project is aimed mostly at mounting duplicates, more or less just for fun and maybe another tool to keep the grandkids involved.

Thanks for the input,

WB

Very cool!

Back when I was doing first day cover design, I bought old American History school books for their illustrations.

Both of these were lifted from early 20th century books. Waaay before Internet clip art!

Jeredutt3 & Tom, Thanks much!

Nice covers, Tom! Unlike a lot of those collector generated covers you see on Ebay, the cachet actually matches the stamps.Thumbs Up
