I have been using for a long time the Scott 2-post binders. While not perfect (when adding pages or reorganizing the sequence of pages), I do find them solid and a very nice album to standardize on. They are also more compact than the Lindner T binders (better system), that just require to many albums to store any collection

Lately I came into possession of a few 3-hole Binders. I noticed that all new Scott pages have both 2 post and 3 hole punched holes, to accommodate both..and you also can easily add the 3-holes by punching the old pages. But the 3 hole albums are oversized when compared to the 2-post ones, making it hard to standardize with both on your bookcase. This is even more so if you use dust covers!
So should I junk the remaining 3-hole albums? What is your opinion on both approaches.

For me, worse of all, it is impossible to put extra stuff unmounted between the pages, such as glassines, cards, envelopes, fdc or even stamps. In the 2-hole albums, one could always hold some extra stuff in the seam of the pages, until such time as you finished. With the 3 hole punch albums, they fall out, or you have to add sheet protectors that will help hold the loose stuff.

Incidentally, except for W Europe, I have gone to Steiner pages in standard D-ring style binders. Since I routinely use sheet protectors (standard size), I can still keep extra material in the album, which I am unable to do with the Scott oversized 3-hole pages.

What do other collectors think, and do?

re: Scott 3 Hole vs Scott 2 Post

I had the same mix with the Scott 2-post and 3-ring binders, also different sized binders.

My solution was to standardize. I only use the G&K #5 2-post binder. They are like the Scott 2-post binder, but are about 5 inches wide. Scott used to have a #4 size binder. The G&K are larger, and that means they hold more pages, less binders are needed so more shelf space overall is taken with pages rather than smaller binders. So, instead of around 125 binders, I now only have about 90. I mix Scott Specialty and International pages along with Steiner pages and only a few Minkus. I use a heavy duty paper punch to make the rectangular holes in the album pages to fit in the 2-post binder posts.

re: Scott 3 Hole vs Scott 2 Post

Nearly every binder I have from most countries beginnings to 1977 are on 2 post Scott Specialtiy pages and cannot even remember seeing a 3 post. They work fine for me and would have no reason to change. For updating and expanding years I use Steiner pages on 8.5 X 11 paper housed in regular 3 post binders.
For countries I'm extending and have several different types of pages, because I have yet not made new coordinated pages, I use Lighthouse Springbacks.
I'd guess that at least 70% of the collections or parts of collections I see at auction are on Scott Specialty pages. This is great because I can easily look through the pages and spot stamps I need by comparing to my own pages. Also a good reason for using Scott Specialty pages.
One of my biggest considerations are uniformity in my scanned pages for my website.
Other than the couple countries I have on White Ace pages, the Scott and Steiner pages
are close enough as to not cause concern. The one thing I really need are a bunch of new or fairly new Scott Specialty 2 post binders as many of mine are starting to get rather beat up. Anyone one wanting to switch to 3 post would probably have a buyer for your old 2 post binders.

re: Scott 3 Hole vs Scott 2 Post

I have both, I am starting to like the three hole three ring Scott albums. I have 4 two post wire Scott Nationals that house my US collection. These are in slip cases and two have the cutouts on the sides and two are without cutouts.

I have my Canada in the Scott Specialty three ring binders with slip cases as well as my AMG, my WW is in Minkus two post latch style albums, and have Minkus two post screw non wire binders for Hungary and Belgium.

My shelves are deep enough so that all of the binders are flush.

Tuskin, I use a round punch twice next to each other. I find it has done job with no problems.

That's exactly what I do. I have a super heavy duty desk punch that I found for 75% off at Office Max. It lets me punch multiple pages at the same time.

re: Scott 3 Hole vs Scott 2 Post

The wealth of information I receive just reading the posts on these threads amazes me. Whenever I see a specialty album I can pick up for a song (with or without stamps) I do it.About a month ago I picked up a Scott's specialty album for BC Virgin Islands with a fair number of stamps in it for less than $28 with shipping. Pages progressed to 1985. My collection runs to 1996. The specialty album is a 2-post rectangular. My pages from 1986-1996 are 2-post round post. So I sat there wondering how to get those round post hole pages into my new rectangular post hole album. Lo and behold I find the most simplest of answers right here. It worked like a charm last night. There's a slight difference in the page widths but it's not a problem. Thanks for a solution!
