Agreed they are a pain, it is difficult sometimes to discern upper from lower case or what picture contains certain items.
Usually there is, at least for letter / number images, an option to hear the combination.
My problem usually is distinguishing between a letter "O" or a zero.
Often it is a matter of your browser security settings, which may allow the web site, but not the domain of the image-thingy.
You may have to set your browser to accept the cookie from the image-thingy web site, or some such thing.
As a developer, it is a hard call/balance. While limiting user frustration is important, so are the hours and hours we spend on deleting spam and other automated nuisances that occur when the image difficulty is dropped and they get worked-around.

I have had the same problem on many websites and resorted to snail mail, phone (f you can find a number, or just plain said to heck with it. Life is too short to play games.
Sometimes you can get an audio read of the letters. There would be a button to click on for that.
Can't blame the webmasters they are just trying to stop robotracking, spamming and hacking.
Is anyone else having difficulty when sending an email to a dealer or society with getting past that darned image verification? Today I gave up sending a message about membership status to a society after five attempts. I carefully and slowly type what I see and still no go. Often the words to copy are out of focus, camouflaged or whatever. I have to squint to try to see them. Then I get tossed when entering what I see.
I have read somewhere that when setting this sort of thing up, webmasters have a choice of how high they want the security settings to be. Some of these people need to rethink their apparent decision to use the highest settings.
