General Philatelic/Supplies, Literature & Software : Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

A while back I purchased a small mixed collection which included some early Israeli MNH complete with tabs. I am now considering building on these stamps to create an Israel collection, as a result I have decided to purchase an Israel catalogue.

Turning to eBay I came across four possibilities:
* Bale Israel Catalogue 2016
* Carmel Israel 2017 Philatelic Catalogue
* Moriah Israel stamps Catalogue 2013
* Israel Postage Stamps 1948-1998 Catalogue no 13 (which appears to have been published by the Israel Postal Authority)

Although Bale seems to be the "standard", US$139.00 is a lot more than I would like to spend right now, especially as I have not yet decided how committed I am to collecting Israel. The other catalogues I have listed above are a lot more affordable, so any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Clive

re: Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

It really depends how specialized you want to get with the country. If you just want to build a general collection, then a standard catalog, or pages from a standard catalog for just Israel, may be the best, and cheapest route. If you want to go specialized, then it will depend how deeply you want to get into it.

re: Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

Michael,
Thanks for the reply, I really should have been more specific. I generally prefer a specialised catalogue as I find that these offer far more depth and interest than the general catalogues - even though affordability might dictate what stamps I actually end up placing in my collection.

If you want specialized, Bale's. Maybe find one a few years old for less bucks.

re: Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

There is a comprehensive list with details of all Israel Stamps on the Isreal Philatelic Federation website. No values of course but a good reference.
If you don't wish to spend lots of cash on a catalogue at this point, I have an (almost)brand new Carmel Catalogue, year 2008 that you can have very cheap (postage plus a few dollars). Message me via the board if interested.
The Carmel catalogue, though not nearly as good as Bale, does have a good listing of all stamps, cover details, Maximum cards, ATM and Computer-Vended labels and Souvenir Leafs. Values are given.
The catalogue is hanging around here doing nothing, a pity for it not to go to a good home !! Winking

re: Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

Hi LondonBus,
Thanks for the pointer to the very useful Israel Philatelic Fed website, and thanks for the catalogue offer, however I think I am going to hold out for something a little more contemporary to use as a price guide.
Currently the soft cover (stamps only) Moriah 2013 catalogue is listed at US$14.99 on eBay (the full hard cover Moriah is $45) are you familiar with the Moriah and how does it compare to the Carmel?
Thanks,
Clive

The Moriah catalogue is privately produced by a dealer here in Israel, Moriah Stamps. At one time it was advertised on the IPF website as being in Hebrew Only but I have never seen a copy so do not know if this is still the case.
Try LOTSOFSTAMPS on eBay for seemingly good deals on catalogues.

Thanks Londonbus,
LOTSOFSTAMPS does seem to have some good deals on catalogues, and postage to Canada, which is often the killer on books and catalogues from the US or UK, is surprisingly reasonable as well.

re: Israel - catalogue recommendations please?

I ordered "Israel Postage Stamps 1948-2008 Stamp Catalogue #14" the official catalogue published by the Israel Post Philatelic Services from http://www.israelpost.co.il/mall.nsf/prodsbycode/63?OpenDocument&L=EN at a cost of 149 NIS (about CD$55) plus postage.

It seems very comprehensive, but of course does not include pricing information. In addition to the stamps of 1948-2008, it also includes sections on vending machine labels, besieged Negev settlements 1948, the transition period, postal stationary etc.

The stamps in this bilingual catalogue (both English and Hebrew) are arranged and numbered chronologically but it also gives the Scott, Bale, Michel and Yvert & Tellier numbers.

I can very much recommend the catalogue, although one would think that the postal service would know better than to mail a hard cover book in nothing but a very lightly padded envelope for protection, resulting in corners that are regrettably somewhat dinged.
