One week from today will mark the one year anniversary of my move to Chicago. After years of abuse, I broke free. For the most part, the physical abuse ceased after my ex's arrest, but the mental, emotional and verbal abuse continued up until my escape. Escape. I do not use that word loosely. I had to hide my ticket for days before the departure. I secretly got out at 3:30 in the morning with what I could carry on my back. It was one of those times when a person finds out who their true friends are, and lives are forever changed. I was brave. I wish I could have been brave many years earlier.

Now. Now, I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. I married the love of my life. She has never once raised a hand at me. She has not even raised her voice at me. That's big. Huge. I now know love. So, to any one of you secretly living in a nightmare that makes you feel ashamed and worthless, don't give up. Never give up. And always remember that the shame does not belong to you, and you do not deserve to live that way.

As is with such things, I had to leave my collection behind. I am just now getting interested in philately again. Zipper and I are working on the WW albums and itching for interesting covers. Life is surprising, and I am thankful for that!

Thank you for your courage and your powerful witness.

May your life only get better and better!

(And, in my experience, philately will come back into focus for you when the time is right.)

Blessings,

re: One Week From Now

Doe,

the world would benefit from a deeper discussion of your past and present. it needn't be here, but understanding how the trap is created, how it is endured, and how it can be left are all things that most of us lay people do not, and cannot, understand. Of course, that requires yet another act of bravery and additional commitment, and it may put you, emotionally, precisely where you don't want to be.

I offer this solely as encouragement IF you ever consider bringing more to light.

Many of my greatest friends are those striving to deal with parts of their lives they wish to change and are actively engaged in it. Damaged is part of the human condition; repair is an incredible process few of us are willing to undertake.

Congratulations, Doe, my great, strong friend, and may happiness continue to blossom, grow, seed, and spread.

David

It is easy for an outsider to say "why don't you leave", but it takes a lot of courage to actually do so. Good for you that you drew the line. I am happy to read how your decision paid off and you found the happiness you deserve. I wish you all the best!

re: One Week From Now

Every now and then someone comes into our lives and just the right moment and we find the strength to do things we thought we'd never be able to do. I am a recovering co-dependent. I did the 12 steps for co-dependency which is just like the regular 12 steps. I didn't get far enough in the program having realized quickly I can be a strong person and say no and mean it. Since then it has been a work in progress. So, Doe, you are at the beginning and you have a peaceful and successful life ahead of you with Zipper by your side. Congrats to making it one year! May you have many more.
