Occasionally I buy from the seller karlmarq at kmphilately.com. My main frustration with sellers outside of Stamporama is a general lack of descriptiveness about the stamps they sell so as with any situation, caveat emptor.
hipstamp.com also has auctions.
I haven't used it in its current incarnation, but I did pick up some nice things in the past.
I dunno about HipStamp. Aside from the auctions, I see that everything on there is way overpriced. In fact they regularly advertise big 50% off sales and the stuff is still overpriced!
I tend to agree on Hipstamp - things do seem very expensive there.

I know you asked about auctions, but for lower CV stuff I've had a lot of luck at Stamps2Go.com. It's worldwide and all fixed price. It's no different than using Buy It Now on eBay and shipping is a fixed price so it's easy to comparison shop. Everything is by Scott number, so if you use a different catalog system that could be a problem. I don't think I've ever purchased a single stamp there for over $10, but I've had plenty of orders for over $50.

Here is a site that has many different auction sites you can search at one time. Also many have prices realized. stampauctionnetwork.com
I have dealt with these auction sites before and have no complaints. You do need to register with the Stamp Auction site first then register with the individual site before bidding. I have only registered with the sites I bid on, not every site.
These are some of my recommendations,
Cherrystone
Downeast
Dutch Country
Jim Forte
Matthew Bennett
Daniel F. Kelleher
James T. McCusker
Michael E. Aldrich Auctions
Miller's Stamp Shop
Jim Mehrer's Postal History
Droege Computing Services
Most items that I bid on are in the more modest price range, $100 and under. When I am bidding on more expensive items I always use an auction agent, well worth the fees. I highly recommend
Purser and Associates, LLC
Here is another site that covers many world wide auction houses in one place.

Not sure if this should have its own thread but I note that a great feature with Colnect is that the stamps link with available stamps on eBay. It's very interesting to see the range of prices when you click the link.

Since Hipstamp is made up of individual sellers, like on eBay, it seems to me that one can find items at all price points, like on eBay.
Only a few sellers participate in the Hipstamp promoted sales, and they pay a premium for that access.
There are a lot more sellers, and a lot more material, than what is promoted in those sales offerings.
Delcampe if you looking to buy or sell more expensive stuff especially after 1st August when they raise there commision charges.
I have had some good sales on Ebid, very low commision but a bit slow as not well known, sells everything much like Ebay
"Since Hipstamp is made up of individual sellers, like on eBay, it seems to me that one can find items at all price points, like on eBay."
Or vice versa. For some/many sellers, the fees will be lower on HipStamp than on eBay, so it could go the other way.
Hi
I think the following three, all Canadian, are good choices. I have used them all regularly with excellent results.
FvH Stamps
Weeda Stamps, and
Sparks Auctions (through Stamp Auctions Online)
If you're available on auction days, you can even bid in real time on the Sparks auctions.

Hi Everyone;
@ SandraUK
I'm also very fond of eBid, and bought and sold for many years there. I found that most of my sales were in the UK and Western Europe, with a few in Eastern Europe and Russia/Asia. So I made many new friends on there.
One lady in Malaysia and I, instant messaged about our stamps, but also about our love of cats. It is really cool having a friend that is literally on the other side of the planet and chatting about pet cats. After hitting the send button, you had to wait about 15-20 seconds for them to reply.
I sold several times in London and other places in England, also Scotland, and Northern Ireland. At that time I was selling stamps, coins, jewellery, and banknotes.
The internet really has changed how we relate to the rest of the planet. I feel that I have more friends globally than I do here in Michigan.
Just sortin'....

Hipstamp hosts a weekly Thursday night auction of US material with all lots starting at $0.01 and ending with no reserve. Tom, since these would have to be ready to ship, I'm assuming they couldnt also be on eBay. Lots of proofs and essays which I'm not drawn to but plenty of worthwhile lots.
This is a site run by Golden Valley Stamp and Coin in MN. I've gotten a number of very nice items from it. They run once auction a month, usually about 2500 items.

I have used:
HipStamp
Stamps2go
Delcampe
As mentioned above HipStamp has some really crazy pricing. I did mention it on their forum how frustrating it is to go through tens of pages of 1/2 cent stamps listed at $1.
Then someone defended the practice telling me he had so many orders for a single cheap stamp that it did not make economic sense to have proper catalog pricing. Well, I still do not believe that, but whatever. There are more options out there.
That is quite an impressive list, but mostly I assume for buying or selling small lots or individual stamps.

But I am curious about where would someone go to sell a multi-volume collection.
East of the Mississippi,
Central states.
or
West Coast ?
Shipping, and accurate lotting as well as commission are important.
All nations stamps and coins auction are in Vancouver and run a weekly auction. The stamp auction network someone already mentioned, but i would point out it hooks into a huge number of places worldwide.
Ok...anyone ever get caught up in the "heat of the moment"? Anyone ever bid too much on auction site and then hope you get outbid? I just won on a premium example of Scott US #1a. It's a beauty! But then again, I always feel like I over pay. The truth is, if you want nice stamps, you have to pony up.
Congrats on your purchase ernieinjax - post a photo when you get it!
Any experience/thoughts on Vance Auctions in Canada?
Thanks in advance for any opinions.
It's been years ago. I have won a lot of auctions there never had any problems. Items as described well packaged. Great service. Don't know if it's the same today.
Re Vance auctions, believe they will not accept a bid of less than 80% of their valuation, as far as I can see that is trying to manipulate the market. It should be the buyers who determine the sale price.
Fair enough if they want to put a reserve, but just specify it as such.
I also object to the sites that charge a buyers premium as well as a sellers charge.
I have bought from Vance, but I think there evaluations of lots is high and they do not share the selling prices unless you bid on a lot then they only give you the selling price of that lot.
They will accept bids less than 80% but they tell you that it has little chance of winning.
It may change my mind if they would publish the selling prices of all lots.
"Congrats on your purchase ernieinjax - post a photo when you get it"
I've had success at Vance Auctions. I have won items at less than 80% of the opening bid--I think it depends on the item, whether it's theirs or not, how long it's been in inventory, etc. I believe I won with a bid of $180 for a $300 estimate (Cape of Good Hope triangle iwth a certificate). There is no buyer's fee and the shipping is very reasonable in my experience. Bidding is in Canadian dollars so you want to keep that in mind when you bid. The staff at Vance have been very responsive. They generally have a lot of lower/mid priced lots available and I've picked up some nice material (German Colonies, Scandinavia, German states) for around 20% of SVC. Their box lots are mixed as every box lot that I've ever bought was, with quality items mixed in with junk.
Although they don't issue a prices realized, you can email them and they will provide you with the winning bids. While not ideal, it is possible to find out what any lot sold for.
Jackie
Ernieinjax - is it normal auction practice to allow "snail mail" bids to arrive after the close of the auction? That seems like it would be open to fraud.
How would you know if/when you are the high bidder, who decides how long to wait for all potential "snail mail" bids to arrive, do they have to be postmarked by a cerain date, how would you know if they said you were outbid that it was true, and on and on.
Guess you have to have some trust in the auction house - was this waiting period spelled out in advance or did you find out after you bid?
Sure hope you are declared high bidder and get the stamp.
Besy wishes....
Postmarked prior to auction closing. Common practice for decades in contests, etc, etc, etc.....?and possibly auctions also?
The Stamp Auction Network is helpful because their search engine covers so many auctions all at once. Plus many of my favorites are members.

Despite Stamp Auction Network's very dated looking website, it works on smartphones to select auctions and view lots for what I have viewed.
Could members provide recommendations and views on auction websites (other than stamporama)
