Measure the vertical dimension of the stamp. The mounts are sized in millimeters.
I don't understand how you could "ruin" a stamp by putting it in a mount. If it doesn't fit, it won't fit. Don't force a stamp into a mount. If a stamp measures 34mm, for example, there is no 34mm-sized mount. Don't put it in a smaller-sized mount, like a 33mm one. Use at least a 36mm mount, which is the first larger mount size made.
This is for Michael78651 I know how to use stamp mounts but I listened to someone that told me to use the following stamp mounts for the Ireland 1922 Overprint stamps. This person told me to use the Prinz precut 21 x 24 mm for the standard Ireland overprint issues and Prinz precut 44 x 27 mm for the Ireland 1922 overprint seahorse issues. Let me tell you these sizes do not fit, and was looking for someone to let me know what size precut stamp mounts will fit and would appreciate any giving me this information.
Hi anglophile
I went into the website that you indicated "The Wolf Collection of Irish Postage Stamps at Notre Dame" and get the following message "There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address"
and it will not let you into the site.
I've begun an Ireland collection (up to decimal currency). I've so far got most of the post 1929 issues, as well as a handful of the cheaper overprints. But the overprints is what it's all about!
So can anyone advise on the best way to learn how to distinguish the different printings (Dollard, Thom or Harrison) and inks (shiny blue-black or dull)? I collect used, so that makes the job of distinguishing detail a bit harder. By the way, I do have an old Mac Donnell Whyte catalogue.
The best I've thought of so far is to get a single mint stamp of each printing and each different ink, and spend some time with a magnifying glass and a strong light. And maybe a pair of compasses and a good clear ruler. And choose stamps from a specialist dealer in Ireland stamps - Raven stamps of Cork, Irishstamps.net or MacDonnell Whyte themselves.
Incidentally I notice that these three dealers all have adverts in Gibbons Ireland catalogue, positioned opposite the pages listing the overprints. Shrewd boys!
I have a question regarding the 1922 Ireland Overprints and the question is the 4 provisional government stamps issued on Feb. 17, 1922, printed in black by Alex Thom & Co. and the overprint measures 14 1/2 x 16 mm and the 13 issued between July and November of 1922 also issued by Alex Thom & Co and the overprint also measures 14 1/2 x 16 mm, how do you tell the difference in overprints so you do not get the two issues mixed up. What I am worried about if you buy from a dealer how do you know you are really getting the one from the other??
Also have one more question and that is that I would like to put these Ireland 1922 overprint stamps in back loaded or split back stamp mounts what would be the size I would need for the regular issue and the 1922 seahorse issue? I have been steered to the wrong size before and have ruined a stamp and therefore would need the exact size of stamp mount size needed?
