My daughter is looking to buy her first car and is considering a 2102 Kia Rio LX hatchback with 42,000 miles. Does anyone have any experience with Kias? She was originally interested in a Ford Focus but the mechanic we took it to for an opinion said the Focus was not a good choice because of bad transmissions. Any advice?

Consumer Reports states that the Kia Rio is a used car to avoid as they do with the Ford Focus.

Consumer Guide Automotive gives the 2013 Kia Rio a score of 5.4 out of 10 for performance and reliability.

re: 2012 Kia Rio car

In South Korea all car imports were legally banned until 1989. After that time, they have effectively used Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) to restrict imports. In other words, every year they change some of the their regulations which inhibits other countries from importing cars at a competitive cost.

One year the Korean government proposed a new regulation that changed the size and shape of a car’s license plates with little notice or opportunity to change to importers. But since front and back bumpers of cars are designed around the size and shape of a license plate, this requirement drove large additional costs to all importers.

I feel that there has been some unfair trade practices coming from Korea, so I do not support Kia.

re: 2012 Kia Rio car

I'm not a big fan of Consumer Reports. They have big bias against American cars, and anything Toyota scores big points. Nearly every car I own and have owned has been on their "don't buy" list and I've had no problems with any of them, driving a few over 200,000 miles.

Consumer Reports car surveys are done by the general public. Non car people, who half the time got swindled by garages and dealers on unnecessary repairs. My brother in law is a typical reader who swears by Consumer Reports. He had a Dodge Caravan. We were at his house and we took a ride into town to buy beer. I immediately heard his left front wheel bearing screaming for mercy. I reported this to him and he pushed it off as, "it's been making that noise forever." Maybe a year later he was on the NJ Turnpike in the fast lane going 80mph and it let loose in spectacular fashion. He smacked the divider and totaled the car. Fortunately he was alone in the car and wasn't hurt. But he often tells the story about how this Dodge "tried to kill him" and failed without any warning! He tells people never to buy anything Chrysler. I've owned three Dodge Caravans and have put over 200,000 miles on each of them without serious issue.

Same guy... we were at another relative's house for Christmas. He loads his whole family up into his HONDA minivan and it refuses to start. I check it out and see that the cheap battery cable end they used has rotted clear away. Having no tools available, I manage to MacGiver it together with aluminum foil and two wood clothes pins. I tell him to drive straight home, about a half hour ride, and to take it immediately to his mechanic the following morning. About two weeks later I see he is online so I ask him how he made out. He replies that the repair is still holding great.

These are the folks who fill out the Consumer Reports surveys!

re: 2012 Kia Rio car

Thank you all for responding. I absolutely hate buying cars, and have read the reviews at several sites (the ones listed above plus others). We are going to see the car tomorrow. So far, she has test driven a Chevy malibu, ford focus, an impala, and nissan sentry. The nissan was the worst by far.

It seems like the only people who post reviews (other than the professionals) are those who have had a fantastic experience or a terrible one. Not many in the middle. So we will see what we see.... thanks again. Happy

re: 2012 Kia Rio car

Hi Sally;

After you have narrowed down to just one vehicle, take it for a test drive to a trusted mechanic, not the dealership, and tell them you will pay them for their time to go over the vehicle and test everything they can and also test drive.

Nowadays nobody with an ounce of brains buys a house without a home inspector. He should also know how to read the car's computer, to check for recent issues. He should not look for fly specks, but only major issues. This should not cost more than $100-200.

Whenever I buy a new used car, I never plan trips longer than 10-20 miles for the first few months. Then when I have some confidence and experience with how the car behaves, I deem it to be trustworthy to use for longer trips. Also avoid using the sound system or noisy heater fan, so as to better hear any odd noises that others may have missed.

Good Luck....

As for consumer reports and car reviews. I ignore their ratings. The observations are usually right but their scoring is skewed. They give more focus to safety items such as breaking distance and crash ratings, fuel economy, etc. so overall decent cars will get lower ratings.

re: 2012 Kia Rio car

Usually we do a fair amount of research prior to a purchase, but for our first trip out looking at cars we just went to see what was available. We got the typical used car salesman (all cliches apply) but did get to drive whatever she thought she liked and could afford. She really liked the Focus so we ran it to our mechanic. I was very glad she was there to hear what he (and the other mechanic) had to say (nothing good).

This car is for sale by private owner. I have done a lot of reading and haven't seen the bad things like with the Focus. If she does like it, we will definitely be driving it to our mechanic. I am sure the two of us look like easy marks, but I know that I am not qualified to check out a car other than just driving it around and listening to it and seeing how it handles. We will have him check out everything.

We have also talked about how there are a lot of cars available and we haven't seen them all yet (hahaha).

Thanks for all the advice.

Sally, does your mechanic have any cars for sale, they usually know when their clients are changing vehicles and if it is one they have been servicing they will be aware of any problems.
It will probably also be a better price than from a dealer.
