re: Stamps used as a Code during wartime

Although perhaps not wartime code messages, the location of a stamp in years past certainly had meaning to many.

re: Stamps used as a Code during wartime

I believe the practice started in England and spread around the world. The legend says that this became so popular postal authorities were driven to issuing regulations on the placement of stamps. While these regulations are well documented I am not aware of any verification that makes this connection.

A rather 'loud' WWI card. The address is just down the road from me.

Besides wartime, young lovers could leave a note that would not be allowed by one's parents during Victorian or post Victorian England.
