Dialysis, damned if you do...dead if you don't

The 1915 Forbin World Wide Revenue Catalog is now available for free download in the Stamp Smarter Library; 300 dpi scan, properly paginated, searchable. I broke it into two parts for easier downloads, 65MB each.

http://www.stampsmarter.com/learning/Home_General.html

Note; after pressing the ‘launch’ button to download, please give it 8-10 seconds for the prompt to ‘save’ the file to appear.

Don,

Thanks for this!

Been looking for a hard copy (i.e. actual book) of this for a few weeks now -
still am, but the download is great to have in the meantime!

Hi Randy,
No problem.

As a matter of fact I happen to have a hard copy of the book now available! (I purchased one so I could scan it and offer it the community.) I paid $75 for it...but if you have some stamps to trade I am sure we can work something out.

Don, I've loaded both parts but cannot find anything to open them with. I either get code babble or non specific error messages. What's the trick?

Hi Antonius,
They are standard PDF files so any PDF reader (i.e. Adobe Reader) will open and read them. There are many PDF readers out there, do you know which one you have installed?

Nice addition to the StampSmarter document collection. Downloaded and loaded both parts with no issues using Apple Macintosh Sierra standard viewer for access. I mostly work with Windows based computers but have been using a Mac lately to gain familiarity for customer support.

re: 1915 Forbin World Wide Revenue Catalog

I have a PDF copy of the catalog that came in six parts, along with a 7th part being a French-English dictionary which does not seem to be part of the Stamp Smarter version. On the other hand, the Stamp Smarter version has the advertisements that are not in my copy. Which I bought on eBay. The pdfs are marked "J&H Books" and copyright James Paul Marston 2011.

I am not sure that the copyright would hold up in the courts, but considering the work and expense to to scan the catalog into a searchable PDF, I felt that paying the small amount asked was only fair. Now that there is a free copy online, I suppose they will lose some potential sales.

There are a number of people who charge for a scanned version of the book on eBay.

The book is in the public domain. So the only thing that you are paying for is the cost of digitizing it, which I do not charge for. Our hobby has had a long history of restricting and charging for access to non-copyrighted information. I see no point in continuing this tradition.
Don

Edit; The Stamp Smarter version (1915) is a complete scan, nothing was left out.

Adobe Reader was the first program I tried. I tried another 7 or 8 programs that should have worked also but no cigar. The common error I get is "not a pdf or corrupted"
Guess I'll have to wait for my son to come over as he's a certified tech guy.

I was successful, also, in downloading copies of the Forbin documents on a WIndows 10 computer from the Google Chrome browser and then opening the downloaded files using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. You may want to try running the MalwareBytes.org free scanner for home use on your computer and checking for a possible malware issue on your computer. I have had clients have issues with opening PDF documents due to a malware issue. Most virus scanner are not that effective at recognizing and removing items often identified as malware or "potentially unwanted programs".
